The Omaha Mavericks and Nebraska Cornhuskers face off on Thursday in a college basketball showdown at Pinnacle Bank Arena. The Omaha Mavericks faced off against Kansas to start the season and although they stuck around for a while, they didn’t have enough talent to keep up. The defense end up giving up 89 points and the offense could only manage 64 points. The defense gave up 46 points in the first half, and in this game, the defense is going to need to be a lot better. Guard Jaeden Marshall was the top player finishing with 13 points and four rebounds. The Mavericks had four different players that scored at least 11 points.
On the other side of this matchup is Nebraska who opened up their season with a 79-66 victory over Maine. At halftime, Nebraska was up 40-28, and although they weren’t dominant in the second half they still held on for the victory. Sam Grisel was the top player for Nebraska scoring 22 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Keisei Tominaga also had a big game finishing with 19 points and two rebounds. In this game, Nebraska needs to try and have a more balanced scoring attack. This is also a game the defense really needs to find success.
Omaha is 7-0 against the spread in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600. The over is 4-0 in Omaha’s last four road games. The over is 4-0 in Omaha’s last four games as a road underdog. The over is 3-0-1 in Nebraska’s last four games as a home favorite. The over is 7-1 in Nebraska’s last eight home games against a team with a losing road record. Omaha is 7-0 against the spread in their last 7 games as an underdog of 13.0 or greater.
Nebraska didn’t look great in the second half against Maine, and they are going to allow Omaha to hang around in this game. I think this Nebraska is top-heavy in terms of talent and the lack of scoring from the bench is going to really hurt them. Nebraska should still win, but Omaha will cover the spread.
