The Central Michigan Chippewas will travel to Milwaukee and take on the Marquette Golden Eagles from the Al McGuire Center on FS2. Marquette and Central Michigan met once back in 2018, with the Golden Eagles picking up a 81-67 win.
This will mark Central Michigan’s first game of the year. The Chippewas went 7-23 in Tony Barbee’s first season in charge, and they’ll begin the 2022-23 season with an uphill battle. Central Michigan lost three of their top four scorers, but leading scorer Kevin Miller returns after a solid freshman season. The 6’ guard flashed at times last season, scoring 23 or more four times in their last ten games, and he posted a nice line of 13.1 points per game, 3.4 rpg, and a team-lead 4.6 apg.
Senior guard Brian Taylor will bring much needed leadership to an inexperienced CMU roster, and he started 29 games last season, and averaged 8.2 ppg and 5.8 rpg. Jesse Zarzuela’s arrival via transfer will prove to be helpful alongside Miller in the backcourt, and he scored 14.7 ppg for Coppin State last season. Max Majerle, son of Thunder Dan, may find a role early for the Chippewas as well.
Marquette opened the season with a home victory over Radford. The Golden Eagles had trouble covering the 20-point margin, as the Highlanders came in ready to compete. Marquette led throughout the contest, but failed to create the separation necessary for a blowout margin. Shaka Smart’s team shot 45.8% from the field, and only hit five of their 19 three pointers, and with a trip to Purdue looming next Tuesday, they’ll need to sharpen up here.
Oso Ighodaro and Oliver-Mazence look set to have bigger roles this season with Justin Lewis moving on to the league. Ighodaro played in all 32 games last year, and scored a game-high 19 points on an efficient 9/12 clip, while grabbing seven boards. Prosper added 13 points and five boards, and those two will likely man the frontcourt for Marquette this season.
The guard play for the Golden Eagles was strong in game one. Kam Jones and Stevie Mitchell each added double figures, while versatile point guard Tyler Kolek nearly had a Jason Kidd-triple double, with nine points, eight boards, and nine dimes.
Central Michigan went 16-13-1 against the spread last season, with a 13-17 over/under record. Marquette went 16-15 ATS last year, with a 16-15-1 o/u record. The Under is 6-2 in CMU's last 8 overall. The Under is 5-2 in Marquette's last 7 home games.
This won’t be an ideal season-opening test for Central Michigan, and things may hit them fast in Milwaukee Thursday. Although they didn’t blow Radford out, Marquette came out with the same Shaka Smart-patent havoc-like defense, and they should have even more success against an even more inferior team in Central Michigan.
The margin feels steep, so take the under for what could be another defensive affair for Marquette in Milwaukee.
