The Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks will face the Youngstown State Penguins this Wednesday evening from Beeghly Arena.

Tennessee-Martin was overwhelmed in their opener versus Pittsburgh, and they fell, 80-58. The Skyhawks went into the locker room down double-digits, and things didn’t improve from there.  Ryan Fiddler’s team shot 32% from the field, and just 15% from deep, and that will have to improve in game two.

K.J. Martin transferred over from Troy to lead the Skyhawks in scoring last season at 16.9 points per game, and he led the team with an underwhelming 11 points versus Pitt.  Parker Stewart returned after leading UTM in scoring back in 2019, but he only scored nine points in his return to the team.  Chris Nix man's the frontcourt, but if he’s unable to avoid foul trouble, the paint will become a liability for Tennessee-Martin.

Youngstown State put it on Canisius in their season opening game, picking up the 92-81 victory, and covering their first spread of the season. The Penguins looked right at home on a brisk Buffalo night, putting up an impressive 92 points in game one. Jerrod Calhoun’s team shot an efficient 56.7% from the field, and went 7/14 from deep, and they’ll look to keep things going in their home opener.

Malek Green reminded his former team of what they’d be missing out on this season. The Canisius transfer recorded a double-double, and scored a game-high 21 points on 8/12 shooting. Green and Northern Kentucky Adrian Nelson are going to cause problems in the front court for YSU. Nelson scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the win. Dwayne Cohill matched last year’s average with 15 points in the opener, while FDU transfer Brandon Rush added 16 points off of the bench, and went 4/5 from the three point line.

Tennesse-Martin went 11-18 against the spread last season, with a 13-16 over/under record. Youngstown State went 16-14 ATS last year, with a 14-16 o/u record.

Tennessee-Martin might get blitzed again Wednesday night, in what could potentially be a blowout. I know it’s a one-game sample, but from the looks of things, the Skyhawks simply don’t have the bodies to stop Youngstown State from executing at home. Their lack of size in general will be a boiling point, and the Penguins should keep rolling here. Youngstown State has the look of a tournament team, and they will surely compete in the Horizon with this seasoned bunch.

Youngstown State big at home here in game.
