The Northern Iowa Panthers and BYU Cougars face off on Saturday in an NIT college basketball showdown at the Marriott Center.
Northern Iowa comes into this game with a 20-11 record overall and they have gone 15-15 against the spread. Northern Iowa was the number one seed in the Missouri Valley tournament but struggled against Loyola Chicago losing 66-43. In the first game of the NIT they faced off with Saint Louis and the offense was elite putting up 80 points on the way to the easy victory. The Panthers are averaging 74.6 points while their defense is giving up 70.4 points per game. AJ Green has been the top player this season averaging 18.9 points while shooting 41 percent from the field and 37.9 percent from behind the three point line.
On the other side of this matchup is the BYU Cougars who sit with a 23-10 record overall and they have gone 14-17 against the spread. BYU’s last game came against Long Beach State in the NIT and the offense was elite in that game scoring 93 points on the way to the easy victory. Alex Barcello has been the top player for BYU averaging 17.1 points while shooting 45 percent from the field and 43.9 percent from behind the three point line. As a team BYU is averaging 78.1 points while their defense is giving up 68.6 points per game. In this game if the defense is good for BYU they will be in good shape to come away with the victory.
Northern Iowa is 6-1 against the spread in their last seven games as a road underdog.
These are both teams that can score and it’s going to be no different in this game. I expect BYU to run up the score but they are going to fail to play any defense and this game will go well over the total. Back the over to cash. In terms of the side it’s a lean to BYU to cover the spread, but the over is the better play.
