Creighton faces San Diego State on Thursday, March 17th, 2022 at Dickies Arena for a First Round NCAA Tournament college basketball matchup.
Creighton made a strong push in the Big East conference tournament, beating Marquette and Providence along the way to make it to the Big East Conference Final. Creighton did lose in that final game to Villanova, 54-48, but it was very comforting to see the Bluejays play so well without their starting point guard, Ryan Nembhard, who is out for the season. Creighton went 22-11 this season and was a solid cover team going 17-14-2 against the spread this season as well. Creighton's leading scorer is its two-way forward Ryan Hawkins, who has scored 13.9 points per game and has earned 7.8 rebounds per game for the Bluejays this season. Hawkins is a dangerous perimeter shooter and is not afraid to let it fly from deep. Creighton as a team scored 69.0 points per game and shot the ball at a 45% clip from the field. Creighton also allowed 65.9 points per game to its opponents this season.
San Diego State out of the Mountain West had a very strong end to the regular season and conference tournament as well, similarly losing the conference tournament final in a 53-52 bout with Boise State. San Diego State had a six-game win streak going before that Mountain West Final and earned some pretty strong wins along the way including victories over Fresno State (twice), Wyoming, and Colorado State. San Diego State was 23-8 this season and earned a 17-14-0 against the spread record as well. San Diego State's leading scorer is Cal transfer, G Matt Bradley. Bradley scored 17.0 points per game and owned a 41.6% 3-point shooting percentage this season. San Diego State's leading rebounder was Nathan Mensah, who earned 7.1 boards per game and was a strong defender in the Mountain West conference this season. San Diego State as a team scored 65.3 points per game and shot the ball at a 43.3% clip from the field. San Diego State also allowed 57.7 points per game to its opponents, making for one of the top defenses in the nation.
San Diego State opens as a 2-point favorite and the total is set at 121. I have to give some credit to Creighton for making a deep run in the Big East tourney and earning the #9 seed here, but this San Diego State team is a special one in my eyes. San Diego State has the #2 ranked defense in terms of adjusted efficiency and Creighton's offense without Nembhard has been a bit inconsistent. San Diego State does a great job at defending the perimeter and forcing turnovers, and the turnover battle has plagued Creighton all season long. Without Creighton's best ball-handler, I have to take San Diego State in this spot and lay the points.
