UCF faces Memphis on Friday, March 11th, 2022 at Dickies Arena for a college basketball AAC conference tournament matchup.
UCF took down its in-state rival, USF, on Thursday night to earn its spot in the quarterfinals on Friday. UCF was a rather large favorite and only won the game by the final score of 60-58, therefore the Knights did not cover the spread. UCF is 18-11 this year and 9-9 in conference play, which has the Knights as the #6 seed in this conference tournament. UCF did not play very well down the stretch of the regular season, losing three of its last five games to Tulsa, Tulane, and Houston all on the road. UCF's leading scorer this season is G Darin Green Jr., who has averaged 13.6 points per game for the Knights. UCF as a team has scored 70.2 points per game and has shot the ball at a 42.7% clip from the field. UCF has also allowed 68.0 points per game to its opponents as well.
Memphis is ready for AAC tourney play as it ended the regular season with four straight wins, including a victory over Houston by double-digits. Memphis is now off of the bubble and in safety with a projected #9 seed (ESPN.com), but as we have seen many times before, things change quite a lot this weekend. Memphis is 19-9 this season with a 13-5 conference record. Memphis has beaten Houston twice this season and has to feel confident that it can run the table in this AAC tournament with the way it's playing. Memphis' leading scorer is C Jalen Duran, who has scored 11.9 points per game and has earned 7.5 rebounds per game for the Tigers as well. Memphis as a team has scored 76.1 points per game and has shot the ball at a 47.3% clip from the field. Memphis has also allowed 68.5 points per game to its opponents.
Memphis' win over Houston makes life a lot easier in terms of earning an at-large bid, but there is no reason for this team to believe it cannot win the AAC and earn the automatic spot. I think Memphis takes care of business in this game and punches its ticket to the semifinal game on Saturday.
