The Southeastern Louisiana Lions and New Orleans Privateers face off on Friday in a college basketball showdown in the Southland Tournament at the Merrell Center. When these two teams faced off on February 24th it took overtime, but the Lions were able to win 59-51.
In that overtime, New Orleans was able to score one point total, and they can’t go stretches like that in this game where they struggle to score.
Southeastern Louisiana comes into this game with a 18-13 record overall and they have won three games in a row. In the last game against Northwestern State the offense was elite scoring 85 points and that led to the victory. The Lions like to play a fast pace and they can score, but at times the defense has been a big issue. Southeastern Louisiana is averaging 79.7 points while their defense is giving up 78.5 points per game. Gus Okafor has been the top player for Southeastern Louisiana averaging 15.2 points while shooting 43.1 percent from the field and 34.5 percent from behind the three point line. There are four different players that are averaging at least 10 points per game.
On the other side of this matchup is the New Orleans Privateers who sit with an 18-12 record but they have been inconsistent at times. On Thursday, New Orleans faced off with McNeese State, and the offense put up 82 points on the way to the victory. Even though they won, the defense still gave up 78 points in that game. New Orleans is averaging 76 points while their defense is giving up 76.4 points per game. The star of this team has been Derek St. Hilaire who is averaging 20.8 points while shooting 43.9 percent from the field and 33.5 percent from behind the three point line.
The first time these two teams faced off both offenses struggled but that isn’t going to be the case again. These are both teams that can run up the score and I expect neither team will play a whole lot of defense. Look for this game to go well over the total.
