Niagara faces Monmouth on Thursday, March 10th, 2022 at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall for a college basketball MAAC tournament matchup.
Niagara destroyed Marist in its regular-season finale by the final score of 83-52 to end the season on a great note. Niagara earned two strong double-digit wins at the end of the season to own a modest 9-11 conference record and a 14-15 overall record. Niagara is a well-coached and solid defensive team that could make some noise in this MAAC tourney. Niagara’s leading scorer is one of the conference’s top talents in G Marcus Hammond and he has scored 18.1 points per game for the Purple Eagles. Niagara as a team has scored 67.7 points per game and has shot the ball at a 44.2% clip from the field. Niagara has also allowed 65.7 points per game to its opponents.
Monmouth earned a winning record in MAAC play this season going 11-9 in league play, but the team did struggle at the end of the regular season a bit. Monmouth lost three of its final four regular-season contests and in those losses, Monmouth scored 65 or fewer points in each. Monmouth will look for a strong quarterfinal performance on both sides of the ball against a Niagara team that it split the season series with. Monmouth’s leading scorer is George Papas, who has scored 15.3 points per game and has earned 2.9 assists per game as well. Monmouth as a team has scored 69.2 points per game and has shot the ball at a 42.3% clip from the field. Monmouth has also allowed 67.8 points per game to its opponents.
Monmouth is a 2-point favorite and the total is set at 128. This should be quite the entertaining quarterfinal matchup between two teams with solid defenses. I think Monmouth is more well-rounded offensively and although its team shooting numbers are not as strong as Niagara's, I think Monmouth has more options offensively. I will take Monmouth in a close one.
