Marquette faces Creighton on Thursday, March 10th, 2022 at Madison Square Garden for a college basketball Big East tournament matchup.
Marquette had a strong regular season in its first season with Shaka Smart at the helm. The Golden Eagles are currently projected to be a #7 seed in the NCAA Tournament according to ESPN bracketology and do have a shot at making a run in this conference tournament. Marquette finished the season with an 85-77 win over a pesky St. John’s team, making it three wins in Marquette’s last five down the stretch. Marquette is 19-11 overall and owns an 11-8 conference record as well. Marquette’s leading scorer is F Justin Lewis, who has scored 17.1 points per game and has earned 8.0 rebounds per game for the Golden Eagles this season. Marquette as a team has scored 74.8 points per game and has shot the ball at a 45.5% clip from the field. Marquette has also allowed 70.8 points per game to its opponents.
Creighton ended the regular season with a 65-60 loss at home against Seton Hall back on March 5th. Back on February 23rd, Creighton learned that its starting guard in Ryan Nembhard would be out for the remainder of the season. Creighton lost two of its last three without Nembhard in the lineup but was able to earn a huge home victory over UCONN back on March 2nd. Creighton is projected to be a #10 seed but would certainly appreciate a conference tournament win here in the quarterfinals. Creighton’s leading scorer is the dual-threat F Ryan Hawkins, who has scored 14.3 points per game and has earned 7.7 rebounds per game as well for the Bluejays. Creighton as a team has scored 69.0 points per game and has shot the ball at a 45.1% clip from the field. Creighton has also allowed 66.7 points per game to its opponents.
Marquette is a 2.5-point favorite and the total is set at 141. It is never fun betting against Shaka Smart in March and I think this Marquette team is built for tournament play. It is going to be a difficult postseason for Creighton without Nembhard in the lineup, and I don't know the Bluejays have enough offensively to compete in this one. I like Marquette here.
