East Carolina faces Cincinnati on Thursday, March 10th, 2022 at Dickies Arena for a college basketball AAC conference tournament matchup.
East Carolina finished the regular season with a road loss to Wichita State on March 5th, 70-62. East Carolina was a 10-point underdog in that game, therefore the Pirates were able to cover the spread. East Carolina did win three of its last five games in the regular season, but those wins were over lowly USF (twice) and Tulsa. East Carolina is 15-14 this season and owns a 6-11 conference record as well. East Carolina’s leading scorer is G Tristen Newton, who has scored 17.4 points per game and has earned 5.0 assists per game for the Pirates as well. East Carolina as a team has scored 69.0 points per game and has shot the ball at a 40.5% clip from the field. East Carolina has also allowed 70.8 points per game to its opponents as well.
Cincinnati struggled mightily down the stretch of the regular season as the Bearcats take a five-game losing streak into this conference tournament. Now some of those losses were expected, such as the back-to-back road losses at Houston and SMU to end the regular season, but a home loss to USF on February 26th is a shock for a program such as Cincinnati’s. Cincinnati is 17-14 this season with a 7-11 AAC record this year and will look to surprise some people in this year’s conference tournament. Cincinnati’s leading scorer this season is G David DeJulius, who has scored 14.5 points per game for the Bearcats. Cincinnati as a team has scored 69.7 points per game and has shot the ball at a 40.7% clip from the field. Cincinnati has also allowed 65.9 points per game to its opponents.
Cincinnati is a 5-point favorite and the total is set at 136.5. My problem is not with ECU's offense, but more so its defense. The East Carolina defense caved late in the game against Wichita State and I worry about that same defense in this conference tournament game. Cincinnati is so strong on the defensive end, so if you are going to make it easy for the Bearcats on offense as well, it could be a very long afternoon for the Pirates. I like Cincinnati in this spot laying the points.
