Furman faces Chattanooga on Monday, March 7th, 2022 at Harrah's Cherokee Center for the 2022 SoCon Conference Tournament Championship.
Furman was aided by a strong second-half performance in its win over a tough Samford team on Saturday afternoon in the semifinals. Furman trailed by eight points at the break but won the second half by a score of 44-33 to win the game 71-68 in the end. Furman is now one win away from the big dance, but it has to go through the #1 overall seed in the conference in Chattanooga. Furman is 22-11 this season with a 12-6 record, putting the Paladins in second in the conference standings. Furman's leading scorer this season is G Mike Bothwell, who has scored 15.4 points per game. Furman as a team has scored 78.3 points per game and has shot the ball at a 46.5% clip from the field. Furman has also allowed 68.9 points per game to its opponents as well.
Chattanooga dominated Wofford in its semifinal matchup in what was a blowout win for the Mocs. Wofford has had a lot of success in the SoCon in recent years, but Chattanooga had no problem taking down the Terriers in what was a 79-56 final score. Chattanooga led by as many as 26 and shot 58.3% from the field in the win. Chattanooga was the clear favorite to win the conference going into the tournament and the Mocs will be the favorite to win this game as well. Chattanooga is 26-7 this season and owns an impressive 14-4 conference record as well. Chattanooga's leading scorer is G Malachi Smith, who has scored 20.2 points per game and has earned 3.1 assists per game for the Mocs. Chattanooga as a team has scored 75.0 points per game and has shot the ball at a 46.8% clip from the field. Chattanooga has also allowed 65.0 points per game to its opponents as well.
Chattanooga is a 1-point favorite and the total is set at 137.5. I think Chattanooga is too much for Furman to handle here, especially when you look at how well the Mocs are playing down the stretch. Chattanooga beat Furman twice in the regular season and I think we see the third and final win for the Mocs on Monday as they earn their ticket to the NCAA Tourney.
