The BYU Cougars and Loyola Marymount Lions face off on Friday in a college basketball showdown in the West Coast Tournament at Orleans Arena. These two teams faced off on February 24th it was BYU that won 79-59.
BYU had four different players who scored at least ten points, including Te’Jon Lucas who finished with 14 points. Alex Merkviladze was the top player for the Lions scoring 15 points and grabbing eight rebounds.
BYU comes into this game with a 21-9 record overall and they need every win they can get at this point of the season. BYU has won two games in a row including the last game against Pepperdine they won 75-59. Two games ago against Loyola Marymount, they only gave up 59 points also. BYU is averaging 73.7 points while their defense is giving up 67.9 points per game. BYU’s biggest issue has been their inconsistency and in this game they are going to need the defense to have a big game. Alex Barcello has been the top player for BYU this year averaging 17 points while shooting 45.7 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from behind the three point line.
Loyola Marymount comes into this game with an 11-17 record overall but they have won two games in a row over Pacific. On Wednesday, the Lions had no issue putting up 86 points, and they beat the Tigers by 20 points. This is an offense that has been inconsistent, but over the last two games they are averaging 88 points per game. The Lions are averaging 69 points per game while their defense is giving up 74 points per game. Eli Scott has been the best player this season averaging 17 points while shooting 51.7 percent from the field. There are three different players that are averaging at least 10 points per game.
Loyola Marymount’s offense has been better as of late, but I still don’t trust this team to run up the score against BYU. It’s going to be tough for the Lions to get to 60 points in this game, and that will be the difference as BYU cruises to the victory. Back BYU against the spread.
