The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers and Bryant Bulldogs will square off at the Ocean Center in the Quarterfinals of the CBI Tournament this Monday afternoon.
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers finished their regular season with an overall record of 16-6 while finishing Sun Belt play with a 9-5 record. Coastal Carolina earned the 2-seed in the Sun Belt East division and defeated the Troy Trojans in the Quarterfinals, however, could not make it to the Sun Belt Finals after being upset by the Appalachian State Mountaineers, 64-61, in OT. Coastal Carolina got off to an impressive 12-3 start to their season, however, struggled a bit on the road in conference play, losing 4 of their first 5 Sun Belt road games. Coastal Carolina was solid statistically on both ends of the court this season and currently rank 25th in scoring offense, 73rd in scoring defense, & 3rd in defensive FG%.
On the season, Coastal Carolina is averaging 79.8 ppg on 45.9% shooting from the field. The Chanticleers are averaging 8.8 three-pointers per game on 36.1% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Coastal Carolina has been led by DeVante’ Jones (20.0 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 3.1 apg, 3.0 spg), Deanthony Tipler (14.5 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 1.8 apg, 1.1 spg), Essam Mostafa (11.4 ppg, 8.6 rpg), & Ebrima Dibba (7.4 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 5.3 apg, 1.6 spg).
Defensively, Coastal Carolina is holding their opponents to an average of 66.7 ppg on 38.3% shooting from the field. The Chanticleers have a rebound margin of 10.3 and a turnover margin of -1.0.
The Bryant Bulldogs finished their regular season with an overall record of 15-6 and finishing Northeast Conference play with a 10-4 record. Bryant earned the 2-seed in the Northeast Conference Tournament and easily made the finals after defeating Scared Heart by an 85-55 margin in the Semifinals, however, the Bulldogs could not punch their ticket to the NCAA Tournament after being defeated by the Mount St. Mary’s Mountaineers, 73-68, in the finals. Bryant got off to a great start to their season, winning 9 of their first 11 games which included a win vs. UMass and a 1-point loss at Syracuse. Bryant has been led by their high-powered offense which comes into this matchup ranked 5th in scoring defense, 45th in FG%, & 14th in 3P-FG%.
On the season, Bryant is averaging 83.9 ppg on 46.8% shooting from the field. The Bulldogs are averaging 9.4 three-pointers per game on 38.4% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Bryant has been led by Peter Kiss (16.9 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 3.3 apg, 1.9 spg), Michael Green III (16.2 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 3.8 apg, 1.3 spg), Charles Pride (13.5 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 2.4 apg, 1.4 spg), & Chris Childs (13.5 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 1.3 apg).
Defensively, Bryant is allowing their opponents to average 74.8 ppg on 40.9% shooting from the field. The Bulldogs have a rebound margin of 2.3 and a turnover margin of -1.7.
The Chanticleers are 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 Monday games and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games following a ATS loss. The Bulldogs are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 Monday games and 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
Bryant has been a fun team to watch with their high-scoring, fast-paced offense, however, the Bulldogs are also a team that can give up many points as they rank just 275th in scoring defense & 277th in turnover margin. Coastal Carolina has been solid in both ends of the court this season and despite not playing the toughest schedule, this is a defense that, on top of ranking in the top-75 in both scoring offense & defense, ranks 3rd in rebound margin & 17th in steals per game. Bryant’s offense is great, however, on a neutral court, I always trust a solid defense over a high scoring offense and as I think the Chanticleers will be able to put up points against the Bryant defense, I am taking Coastal Carolina to cover this small spread. Good Luck!
