The VCU Rams and Oregon Ducks will square off at Indiana Farmers Coliseum this Saturday in the 1st round of NCAA Championship in the West Division.

The 10-seed VCU Rams come into the NCAA Championship with an overall record of 19-7 while finishing conference play with an 19-7 record. VCU earned the 2-seed in the A-10 Championship and picked up wins against Dayton and Davidson, however, the Rams could not secure the A-10 Championship after being defeated by the St. Bonaventure Bonnies, 74-65, this past Sunday. VCU struggled offensively against the tough St. Bonaventure defense and could not fight back after the Bonnies took a 55-39 lead with 10:11 left in regulation. VCU shot 40.7% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc while St. Bonaventure shot 40.3% from the field and 42.1% from beyond the arc. VCU won the turnover battle by a 10-9 margin, however, was outrebounded by the Bonnies by a 42-32 margin. Leading the way for the Rams was Nah’Shon Hyland who had 21 points, 6 rebounds, & 2 assists.

On the season, VCU is averaging 71.7 ppg o n 45.1% shooting from the field. The Rams are averaging 6.5 three-pointers per game on 32.9% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, VCU has been led by Nah’Shon Hyland (19.4 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 2.1 apg, 2.0 spg), Vince Williams jr. (10.6 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 2.2 apg, 1.1 spg), Jamir Watkins (7.4 ppg, 2.7 rpg), & Adrian Baldwin Jr. (6.8 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 4.4 apg, 2.1 spg).

Defensively, VCU is holding their opponents to an average of 65.2 ppg on 40.5% shooting from the field. The Rams have a rebound margin of -0.6 and a turnover margin of 2.2.

The 7-seed Oregon Ducks come into the NCAA Championship with an overall record of 20-6 while finishing conference play with an 14-4 record. Oregon earned the 1-seed in the Pac-12 Championship and picked up a 91-73 win over Arizona State in the quarterfinals, however, the Ducks could not reach the Pac-12 Championship game after being upset by the 5-seed Oregon State Beavers, 75-64, in the semifinals. Oregon struggled defensively against their in-state rivals and could not fight back after the Beavers took a 58-41 lead with 10:55 left in regulation. Oregon shot 41.8% from the field and 24.0% from beyond the arc while Oregon State shot 50.0% from the field and 52.6% from beyond the arc. Oregon won the turnover battle by a 16-9 margin, however, the Ducks were outrebounded by the Beavers by a 38-24 margin in the loss. Leading the way for the Ducks was Eugene Omoruyi who had 14 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks, & 5 steals.

On the season, Oregon is averaging 74.4 ppg on 47.2% shooting from the field. The Ducks are averaging 8.4 three-pointers per game on 37.9% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Oregon has been led by Eugene Omoruyi (16.7 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 2.2 apg, 1.5 spg), Chris Duarte (16.7 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 2.3 apg, 1.9 spg), LJ Figueroa (12.3 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.6 spg), & Will Richardson (11.1 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 3.6 apg, 1.0 spg).

Defensively, Oregon is holding their opponents to an average of 67.4 ppg on 43.5% shooting from the field. The Ducks have a rebound margin of 1.0 and a turnover margin of 2.4.

The Rams are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a ATS loss and 15-5 ATS in their last 20 NCAA Tournament games. The Ducks are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall and 13-3 ATS in their last 16 neutral site games.

VCU is a solid team that is led by their defense that ranks 49th in scoring defense, 34th in defensive FG%, & 5th in steals per game, however, I just do not think that the Rams can matchup talent wise to a very good Oregon team. Oregon has won 11 of their last 13 games and between the fact that the Ducks rank in the top-100 in both scoring offense & defense and that I think the Ducks offense will be able to find some success against the Rams defense, I am taking Oregon to cover this mid-range spread. Good Luck!
