UCF faces Memphis on Friday, March 12th at Dickies Arena for an NCAA basketball AAC Tournament matchup.
UCF took care of business easily against East Carolina in the first round of the conference tournament. UCF took down the Pirates by the final score of 72-62 and was able to cover the 5.5-point spread as well. UCF held East Carolina to a measly 18.8% three-point percentage in the contest, as the UCF defense stepped up in a big way. UCF is now in the quarterfinals against a tough Memphis team that knows a thing or two about playing defense. UCF's leading scorer so far this season has been G Darius Perry, who has scored 14.6 points per game for the Golden Knights. UCF as a team has scored 67.2 points per game and has shot the ball at a 43.1% clip from the field. UCF has also allowed 69.8 points per game to its opponents as well.
Memphis ended its regular season with a heartbreaking loss to the top team in the American in Houston. Houston beat Memphis at the buzzer in a 67-64 thrilling contest. Memphis is still 15-7 overall and 11-4 in conference play this season, a record that gave the Tigers a first-round bye. Memphis was 12-10 against the spread this season, while UCF was 13-9 against the spread. Memphis' leading scorer so far this season has been G Landers Nolley II, who has scored 13.1 points per game for the Tigers. Memphis as a team has scored 72.1 points per game and has shot the ball at a 44.1% clip from the field. Memphis has also allowed 62.3 points per game to its opponents as well.
The line has not yet been released for this game, so be sure to check back soon for updates regarding the odds. I like Memphis to win this game, but I do think this will be a hard-fought defensive battle between two teams that allow less than 70 points per game. I could see both teams in the low 60s here, and I will lean Memphis' way.
UPDATE: Memphis opens as a 6.5-point favorite and the total is set at 135. I am going to take the under here, as I do not see either of these teams scoring a ton in what should be a very competitive quarterfinal matchup.
