The Milwaukee Panthers and Cleveland State Vikings will square off at the Indiana Farmers Coliseum in the Semifinals of the Horizon League Championship this Monday night.
The 8-seed Milwaukee Panthers (10-11) were able to advance to the Semifinals after upsetting the 2-seed Wright State Raiders, 94-92 in OT, this past Tuesday. In one of the most incredible comebacks in recent memory, Milwaukee fought back from a 69-45 deficit with just 8:07 left in regulation to force OT and was able to secure the victory after a pair of FT’s by DeAndre Gholston gave the Panthers a 94-89 lead with just :08 seconds left in OT. Milwaukee shot 42.7% from the field and 37.9% from beyond the arc while Wright State Raiders shot 47.5% from the field and 31.6% from beyond the arc. Milwaukee was outrebounded by Wright State by a 47-35 margin, however, the Panthers won the turnover battle by a 20-13 margin. Leading the way for the Panthers was DeAndre Gholston who had 31 points, 9 rebounds, & 4 assists.
On the season, Milwaukee is averaging 76.0 ppg on 43.9% shooting from the field. The Panthers are averaging 7.4 three-pointers per game on 33.4% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Milwaukee has been led by DeAndre Gholston (17.1 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 1.3 apg, 1.2 spg), Te’Jon Lucas (15.2 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 5.8 apg, 1.1 spg), Josh Thomas (11.9 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 1.8 apg), & Tafari Simms (8.1 ppg, 3.9 rpg).
Defensively, Milwaukee is holding their opponents to an average of 76.5 ppg on 45.2% shooting from the field. The Panthers have a rebound margin of -3.1 and a turnover margin of 2.3.
The Cleveland State Vikings (17-7) advanced to the Semifinals after defeating the 10-seed Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons, 108-104 in 3OT, this past Tuesday. In a tight game throughout, Cleveland State was able to finally pull away in the 3rd OT after forcing a Purdue Fort Wayne turnover with just :04 seconds left while up 107-104. Cleveland State shot 49.4% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc while Purdue Fort Wayne shot 50.0% from the field and 44.4% from beyond the arc. Cleveland State outrebounded Purdue Fort Wayne by a 50-36 margin while both the Vikings and the Mastodons each pulled down 13 rebounds each. Leading the way for the Vikings was Torrey Patton who had a double-double with 30 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists, & 1 steal.
On the season, Cleveland State is averaging 71.1 ppg on 44.9% shooting from the field. The Vikings are averaging 6.5 three-pointers per game on 31.8% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Cleveland State has been led by Torrey Patton (14.6 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 2.6 apg, 1.0 spg), D’Moi Hodge (10.3 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.7 spg), Tre Gomillion (10.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 2.4 apg), & Craig Beaudion (9.5 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 3.3 apg, 1.2 spg).
Defensively, Cleveland State is allowing their opponents to average 70.9 ppg on 42.8% shooting from the field. The Vikings have a rebound margin of -0.2 and a turnover margin of 1.0.
The Panthers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600 and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall. The Vikings are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 Monday games and 13-3 ATS in their last 16 games following a ATS loss.
Cleveland State has had a tremendous season, however, it is concerning that their defense, which ranks just 194th in scoring defense, struggled so much against the 10-seed Purdue Fort Wayne offense. Milwaukee has bene playing some great basketball, especially on the offensive end as the Panthers have averaged 85.2 ppg over their last six games and as I think this is going to be a high-scoring affair that will come down to the final few possessions, I think the play here is to take Milwaukee and the points while putting some on the over. Good Luck!
