The VMI Keydets and Furman Paladins will square off at the Harrah’s Cherokee Center in the Quarterfinals of the SoCon Championship this Saturday night.
The VMI Keydets finished their regular season with an overall record of 12-11 and earned the 6-seed in the SoCon Championship after finishing conference play with a 7-7 record. VMI struggled a bit defensively this season as the Keydets rank just 282nd in scoring defense, however, VMI was able to have success on the season behind an offense that currently ranks 22nd in scoring offense, 52nd in FG%, & 2nd in three-pointers made per game. VMI did not pick up a big non-conference win early in the season but had competitive games against Penn State & Virginia Tech and the Keydets displayed the talent to be able to beat anyone in the SoCon with their wins against Wofford, Furman, & UNC Greensboro.
On the season, VMI is averaging 80.5 ppg on 46.6% shooting from the field. The Keydets are averaging 11.1 three-pointers per game on 38.8% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, VMI has been led by Greg Parham (18.6 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 4.0 apg, 1.1 spg), Jake Stephens (14.7 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 3.5 apg, 1.6 bpg), Kamdyn Curfman (13.1 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 2.3 apg), & Sean Conway (10.3 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 1.4 apg).
Defensively, VMI is allowing their opponents to average 75.4 ppg on 42.3% shooting from the field. The Keydets have a rebound margin of 2.3 and a turnover margin of -2.4.
The Furman Paladins finished their regular season with an overall record of 16-8 and earned the 3-seed in the SoCon Championship after finishing conference play with a 10-5 record. Furman was solid on both ends of the court this season, however, the Paladins were led by their offense which currently ranks 36th in scoring offense, 22nd in FG%, & 23rd in three-pointers made per game. Furman showed everyone that they would once again be a tough team to beat this season after losing a close 83-80 battle against Alabama, and despite some trouble in road games against the top team in the SoCon Conference, Furman comes into this game winning 5 of their last 7 games with wins at Mercer and at home against UNC-Greensboro.
On the season, Furman is averaging 79.2 ppg on 48.6% shooting from the field. The Paladins are averaging 9.6 three-pointers per game on 33.8% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Furman has been led by Matt Bothwell (15.8 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 3.0 apg, 1.6 spg), Noah Gurley (14.8 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 2.3 apg, 1.1 bpg), Clay Mounce (13.7 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 1.4 apg, 1.0 spg), & Alex Hunter (10.9 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 3.7 apg, 1.0 spg).
Defensively, Furman is allowing their opponents to average 68.0 ppg on 43.8% shooting from the field. The Paladins have a rebound margin of 2.6 and a turnover margin of 2.3.
The Keydets are 10-1 ATS in their last 11 games following a ATS loss and 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 games overall. The Paladins are 4-11 ATS in their last 15 games overall and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 neutral site games.
VMI is a solid team that can certainly do damage on the offensive end with an outstanding three-point attack, however, the Keydets are hard to trust when they are away from their home court as they come into this game with just a 1-10 record on the road. Furman lost their one matchup against VMI in a 74-73 battle on the road, however, I think the Furman offense is going to find more success against the Keydets at a neutral stie and as I just cannot trust the VMI offense will be able to produce away from their home court, I am taking Furman to cover this mid-range spread. Good Luck!
