The UNC Wilmington Seahawks and the William & Mary Tribe will square off in the 1st round of the CAA Championship this Saturday night in College Basketball action.
The UNC Wilmington Seahawks finished their regular season with an overall record of 7-9 and earned the 10-seed in the CAA Championship after finishing conference play with a 1-6 record. UNC Wilmington was led by their offense this season with ranked 51st in scoring offense, however, the Seahawks struggled defensively and come into postseason play ranking just 258th in scoring defense & 308th in defensive FG%. UNC Wilmington got off to a great start to their season winning 6 of their first 9 games, however, the Seahawks struggled in conference play and come into this game, losing 6 of their last 7 games.
On the season, UNC Wilmington is averaging 77.3 ppg on 44.6% shooting from the field. The Seahawks are averaging 7.5 three-pointers per game on 34.3% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, UNC Wilmington has been led by Jaylen Sims (17.8 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 1.8 apg), Ty Gadsden (14.7 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 1.8 apg), Mike Okauru (14.5 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 4.0 apg, 1.8 spg), & Joe Pridgen (12.1 ppg, 8.2 rpg, 1.8 apg, 1.1 spg). Jaylen Sims is out for the rest of the season due to a left leg injury.
Defensively, UNC Wilmington is allowing their opponents to average 73.8 ppg on 47.1% shooting from the field. The Seahawks have a rebound margin of -2.8 and a turnover margin of 2.9.
The William & Mary Tribe finished their regular season with an overall record of 6-9 and earned the 7-seed in the CAA Championship after finishing conference play with a 4-6 record. William & Mary lost a bunch of talent from last year’s team and it showed as the Tribe comes into the CAA Tournament ranked just 300th in scoring offense, 290th in FG%, 249th in scoring defense, & 294th in defensive FG%. William & Mary was able to pick up a few conference victories this season, however, the Tribe really struggled in those losses as William & Mary lost by 20+ points four times this season.
On the season, William & Mary is averaging 73.3 ppg on 46.6% shooting from the field. The Tribe are averaging 5.9 three-pointers per game on 29.3% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, William & Mary has been led by Luke Loewe (16.0 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 3.2 apg, 1.4 spg), Connor Kochera (13.9 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 1.4 apg), Quinn Blair (11.6 ppg, 5.8 rpg), & Yuri Covington (9.9 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 2.1 apg).
Defensively, William & Mary is allowing their opponents to average 73.3 ppg on 46.6% shooting from the field. The Tribe have a rebound margin of -2.7 and a turnover margin of -2.5.
The Seahawks are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 Saturday games and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The Tribe are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight up loss, however, are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 neutral stie games.
Both UNC Wilmington and William & Mary did not play much basketball in February as they combined for just three games due to Covid-19 protocols. UNC Wilmington will be without their leading scorer in Jaylen Sims, however, this is still a team that has some solid offensive weapons. William & Mary looked awful in their 2-game series against Elon, losing both games by a combined 40 points, and as I just cannot trust the Tribe offense to have any success, even against a below average UNC Wilmington defense, I am taking the Seahawks to cover this small spread. Good Luck!
