The Mercer Bears and Wofford Terriers will square off at the Harrah’s Cherokee Center in the Quarterfinals of the SoCon Championship this Saturday night.
The Mercer Bears finished their regular season with an overall record of 16-10 and earned the 7-seed in the SoCon Championship after finishing conference play with an 8-9 record. Mercer advanced out the 1st round on Friday after defeating the 10th ranked Samford Bulldogs, 87-59. Mercer was outstanding defensively against Samford and had no trouble securing the victory after taking a 56-35 lead with 14:17 left in regulation. Mercer shot 47.0% from the field and 46.2% from beyond the arc while Samford shot 30.3% from the field and 25.9% from beyond the arc. Mercer won the turnover battle by a 15-9 margin while each team pulled down 43 rebounds. Leading the way for the Bears was Felipe Haase who had 17 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, & 1 block.
On the season, Mercer is averaging 78.0 ppg on 48.4% shooting from the field. The Bears are averaging 8.8 three-pointers per game on 37.8% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Mercer has been led by Ross Cummings (14.4 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2.5 apg), Neftali Alvarez (13.1 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 4.3 apg, 1.5 spg), Felipe Haase (11.9 ppg, 7.4 rpg, 2.9 apg), & Leon Ayers III (11.8 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 2.0 apg, 1.1 spg).
Defensively, Mercer is allowing their opponents to average 72.8 ppg on 44.2% shooting from the field. The Bears have a rebound margin of 2.3 and a turnover margin of -0.4.
The Wofford Terriers finished their regular season with an overall record of 15-8 and earned the 2-seed in the SoCon Championship after finishing conference play with a 12-5 record. Wofford did a decent job on the defensive end this season (109th in scoring defense), however, the strength of this Terriers team comes on the offensive end as Wofford currently ranks 91st in scoring offense, 37th in FG%, & 11th in three-pointers made per game. Wofford could not pick up a big non-conference win this season after falling to both Richmond & Texas A&M, however, the Terriers were once again great in conference play which include wins over UNC Greensboro & Furman.
On the season, Wofford is averaging 74.9 ppg on 47.4% shooting from the field. The Terriers are averaging 10.3 three-pointers per game on 36.0% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Wofford has been led by Storm Murphy (17.6 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 4.4 apg, 1.0 spg), Tray Hollowell (11.3 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 2.1 apg), Messiah Jones (10.0 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 1.3 apg), & Morgan Safford (9.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 1.1 apg, 1.0 spg).
Defensively, Wofford is allowing their opponents to average 68.0 ppg on 43.5% shooting from the field. The Terriers have a rebound margin of 2.4 and a turnover margin of 0.1.
The Bears are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a straight up win of more than 20 points, however, are just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 neutral site games. The Terriers are 5-0-1 ATS in their last 6 neutral site games as a favorite and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 Saturday games.
Wofford was able to defeat Mercer in both their games during the regular season and although the final score with close in their recent matchup (72-69), this was a game that Wofford led comfortably throughout while shooting over 50.0% from the field. Mercer has a solid offense which ranks 42nd in scoring offense, however, this is a defense that has struggled, ranking just 240th in scoring defense & 207th in defensive FG%. Wofford is the more balanced team and as I think their defense will keep the Mercer offense in check, I think the Terriers do enough in this one to cover this small spread. Good Luck!
