Loyola Marymount faces Saint Mary's on Saturday, March 6th at Orleans Arena for an NCAA basketball WCC Tournament matchup.
Loyola Marymount had to take down a very tough team in the second round of the WCC Tournament in San Francisco on Friday night. San Francisco was the favorite according to the spread in that game, but Loyola Marymount was able to take down the Dons by the final score of 70-66 in a very tight game. Loyola Marymount now has a date with another strong team in the WCC in Saint Mary's. These two teams have only met once this season, and in that game, Saint Mary's was victorious by the final score of 65-61. Loyola Marymount's leading scorer so far this season has been G Eli Scott, who has scored 17.6 points per game for the Lions. Loyola Marymount as a team has scored 70.6 points per game and has earned 13.3 assists per contest as well. Loyola Marymount has also allowed 68.9 points per game to its opponents.
Saint Mary's had the luxury of earning a bye from the first two rounds of the WCC. Saint Mary's ended its regular season with a 65-51 loss to BYU on the road, which was not a good look for the Gaels whatsoever. Saint Mary's had been playing decent basketball before that loss, but even still, this is not the strongest Saint Mary's team we have seen in years past. Saint Mary's is 13-8 this season and will look to reach the WCC semifinals yet again. Saint Mary's leading scorer so far this season has been G Logan Johnson, who has scored 12.8 points per game for the Gaels. Saint Mary's as a team has scored 65.1 points per game and has earned 10.9 assists per contest as well. Saint Mary's has also allowed 62.3 points per game to its opponents as well.
The line has not yet been released for this game, so be sure to check back soon for updates regarding the odds. I believe Saint Mary's will open as the favorite here, but I think Loyola Marymount is a live dog. Saint Mary's has the team history and better defense to show for it, but has not played in a while and struggles to score points in spots. Loyola Marymount should not show any signs of rust after playing on Friday and I will take the Lions to pull off the upset over a conference giant like Saint Mary's here.
UPDATE: Saint Mary's opens as a 4.5-point favorite and the total is set at 125. Like I mentioned above, I think Loyola Marymount has a great chance to win this game outright. Take the points just in case.
