The Hartford Hawks will travel to Patrick Gymnasium to take on the Vermont Catamounts in the Semifinals of the American East Tournament this Saturday afternoon.
The Hartford Hawks finished their regular season with an overall record of 11-8 and earned the 4-seed in the American East Tournament with a conference record of 8-6. Harford has won both of their games so far in the American East Tournament as the Hawks defeated the 9-seed Binghamton Bearcats, 77-60, this past Saturday and defeated the 5-seed Albany Great Danes, 83-77, this past Sunday. Hartford was strong on the offensive end against Albany in their latest victory and was able to pull away later in the 2nd half after taking a 76-71 lead with 2:07 left in regulation. Hartford was outrebounded by Albany by a 24-22 margin, however, won the turnover battle by a 14-10 margin. Leading the way for the Hawks was Traci Carter who had 20 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, & 2 steals.
On the season, Hartford is averaging 65.7 ppg on 43.0% shooting from the field. The Hawks are averaging 7.7 three-pointers per game on 32.5% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Hartford has been led by Austin Williams (13.0 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 1.7 apg, 1.0 spg), Traci Carter (10.9 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 3.5 apg, 2.6 spg), Miroslav Stafl (10.7 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 1.3 apg), & Hunter Marks (9.5 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 1.4 apg).
Defensively, Hartford is holding their opponents to an average of 63.8 ppg on 42.3% shooting from the field. The Hawks have a rebound margin of -1.9 and a turnover margin of 1.1.
The Vermont Catamounts finished their regular season with an overall record of 10-4 and earned the 2-seed in the American East Tournament after finishing conference play with a 10-4 record. Vermont was solid on both ends of the court this season, however, the Catamounts were especially strong on the defensive end as they come into this game ranked 23rd in scoring defense, 17th in defensive FG%, & 52nd in rebound margin. Vermont had a late start to their season as they did not play their first game until late December and although they struggled a bit to start the season, going just 2-3 over their first 5 games, the Catamounts were able to reel off 8 straight wins before losing their regular season finale to UMBC.
On the season, Vermont is averaging 73.6 ppg on 46.4% shooting from the field. The Hawks are averaging 7.9 three-pointers per game on 34.8% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Vermont has been led by Ryan Davis (18.8 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 1.2 apg), Stef Smith (13.8 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 1.7 apg), Ben Shungu (10.6 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 3.4 apg), & Justin Mazzulla (8.2 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 1.5 apg).
Defensively, Vermont is holding their opponents to an average of 62.9 ppg on 39.5% shooting from the field. The Catamounts have a rebound margin of 4.4 and a turnover margin of 0.1.
The Hawks are 5-0-1 ATS in their last 6 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600 and 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 road games vs. a team with a winning home record. The Catamounts are 21-8-1 ATS in their last 30 home games vs. a team with a losing road record, however, are just 2-5 ATS in their last 7 home games.
Vermont has been the team to beat in the American East for awhile now, however, despite still getting the 2-seed this season, the Catamounts just have not looked as strong as we are used to seeing at this point of the season. Harford has won 4 of their last 6 games and despite having an offense that can struggle at times, the Hawks have been solid defensively this season and currently rank 35th in scoring defense. Vermont lost back-to-back games at home to NJIT & Albany earlier this season and between the fact the Catamounts have not played a game in about two weeks and that I think this will be a low scoring affair, I think the play here is to take the Hawks and the points. Good Luck!
