The UL Monroe Warhawks and the South Alabama Jaguars will square off at the Pensacola Bay Center in the 1st round of the Sun Belt Conference Championship this Friday night.
The UL Monroe Warhawks finished their regular season with an overall record of 7-18 and earned the 6-seed in the West Division of the Sun Belt Conference Championship after finishing conference play with an 5-13 record. UL Monroe was led by their defense this season which currently ranks 123rd in scoring defense & 81st in steals per game, however, the Warhawks had trouble racking up wins this season behind an offense that currently ranks just 316th in scoring offense & 274th in FG%. UL Monroe struggled at the beginning of conference play, at one point losing 10 straight games, however the Warhawks better down the stretch splitting their last 6 regular season games which included a 2-game sweep over Little Rock.
On the season, UL Monroe is averaging 63.9 ppg on 41.8% shooting from the field. The Warhawks are averaging 7.5 three-pointers per game on 34.5% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, UL Monroe has been led by Russell Harrison (12.4 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 1.9 apg, 1.1 spg), Koreem Ozier (11.6 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 2.6 apg, 1.3 spg), Josh Nicholas (9.3 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 1.2 apg), & Elijah Gonzales (6.8 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 3.8 apg, 2.0 spg).
Defensively, UL Monroe is allowing their opponents to average 68.5 ppg on 43.6% shooting from the field. The Warhawks have a rebound margin of -7.3 and a turnover margin of 1.2.
The South Alabama Jaguars finished their regular season with an overall record of 16-10 and earned the 3-seed in the East Division of the Sun Belt Conference Championship after finishing conference play with a 10-7 record. South Alabama was solid on both ends of the court this season as on the offensive end, the Jaguars currently rank 109th in scoring offense & 36th in three-pointers made per game while defensively, South Alabama ranked 55th in defensive FG% & 63rd in turnover margin. South Alabama struggled at the start of conference play as the Jaguars went 2-5 over their first 7 games, however, the Jaguars went on the tear, winning their next 10 games before dropping their final two regular season games last week against Georgia State.
On the season, South Alabama is averaging 74.1 ppg on 44.3% shooting from the field. The Jaguars are averaging 9.0 three-pointers per game on 36.3% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, South Alabama has been led by Michael Flowers (20.8 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 3.5 apg, 1.7 spg), Tyreke Locure (13.9 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 3.0 apg, 2.1 spg), John Pettway (10.8 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 1.9 apg, 1.5 spg), & Kayo Goncalves (9.8 ppg, 6.1 rpg).
Defensively, South Alabama is allowing their opponents to average 70.5 ppg on 41.0% shooting from the field. The Jaguars have a rebound margin of -1.5 and a turnover margin of 2.3.
The Warhawks are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a ATS win. The Jaguars are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games overall and 18-8-2 ATS in their last 28 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400.
UL Monroe played better down the stretch, however, this is still not a great team as the Warhawks went just 2-10 on the road and had trouble scoring the basketball all season. South Alabama showed throughout conference play that they have the talent on both ends of the court to compete with anyone in the Sun Belt and between the fact that the Jaguars had a winning road record and that I believe their defense will have success slowing down the Warhawks, I am taking South Alabama to cover this mid-range spread. Good Luck!
