Florida Gulf Coast faces North Alabama on Friday, March 5th at UNF Arena for an NCAA basketball ASUN Semifinals matchup.
FGCU had to upset the #3 seed in the tournament in Lipscomb in order to be here in the semifinals. FGCU did not have the greatest regular season, but this is a team and coaching staff that has a ton of experience in the ASUN Conference Tournament and has made many deep runs throughout school history. FGCU has now won four of its last six games overall, which includes two wins over this North Alabama team at home. FGCU's leading scorer so far this season has been G Cyrus Largie, who has scored 13.3 points per game for the Eagles. FGCU as a team has scored 71.2 points per game and has shot the ball at a 42.4% clip from the field. FGCU has also allowed 67.9 points per game to its opponents as well.
North Alabama took down North Florida in the quarterfinals by the final score of 68-60 on Thursday night. North Alabama struggled badly to end the regular season, but the Lions were able to at least grab one win over Lipscomb right before the ASUN Tournament, which may have given the team the necessary momentum in the quarterfinals. North Alabama's leading scorer so far this season has been F Mervin James, who has scored 13.5 points per game for the Lions. North Alabama as a team has scored 72.2 points per game and has shot the ball at a 42.0% clip from the field. North Alabama has also allowed 68.9 points per game to its opponents as well.
The line has not yet been released for this game, so be sure to check back soon for updates regarding the odds. I have to give the edge to FGCU here, as I believe its quarterfinal win was a lot more impressive and the team's history in these semifinals games is hard to ignore. I believe FGCU will be the underdog here, and if so, I think we are getting great value with the Eagles.
UPDATE: FGCU opens as a 1.5-point favorite and the total is set at 135.5. I like FGCU laying the small number and advancing to the semis.
