The Saint Joseph’s Hawks and La Salle Explorers will travel to the Stuart C. Siegel Center this Wednesday morning to face off in the 1st round of the A-10 Championship.
The Saint Joseph’s Hawks finished their regular season with an overall record of 4-14 and earned the 13-seed in the A-10 Championship after finishing conference play with a 3-9 record. Saint Joseph’s got off to an optimistic start to their season after losing their opener in OT to Auburn and then gave Kansas a game for about 30 minutes, however, after losing their best player for most of the season in Ryan Daly, the Hawks had trouble getting anything going and lost 14 of 15 games at one point. Saint Joseph’s missed about three weeks of action in the beginning of February due to Covid-19 protocols, however, when the returned they got Ryan Daly back and ended their regular season with an impressive 3-game winning streak that included impressive wins against Dayton & Richmond.
On the season, Saint Joseph’s is averaging 72.5 ppg on 41.3% shooting from the field. The Hawks are averaging 9.6 three-pointers per game on 31.3% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Saint Joseph’s has been led by Ryan Daly (19.4 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 2.9 apg, 1.1 spg), Taylor Funk (17.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 1.4 apg), Jordan Hall (9.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 5.9 apg, 1.3 spg), & Dahmir Bishop (7.5 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 1.5 apg).
Defensively, Saint Joseph’s is allowing their opponents to average 82.6 ppg on 46.9% shooting from the field. The Hawks have a rebound margin of -7.0 and a turnover margin of -1.3.
The La Salle Explorers finished their regular season with an overall record of 9-15 and earned the 12-seed in the A-10 Championship after finishing conference play with a 6-11 record. La Salle had trouble putting wins together this season as the Explorers struggled on both sides of the court as they finished their regular season ranked just 257th in both scoring offense & scoring defense. La Salle showed some sings of life at the times this season with a road win at Richmond and a home win against Saint Louis, however, the Explorers just could not string wins together this year and suffered some tough losses, including an 8-point loss in early February.
On the season, Saint Joseph’s is averaging 68.2 ppg on 43.6% shooting from the field. The Hawks are averaging 7.8 three-pointers per game on 34.1% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Saint Joseph’s has been led by Sherif Kenney (9.9 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 1.7 apg, 1.1 spg), Jack Clark (9.8 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 1.2 apg), Jhamir Brickus (9.0 ppg, 1.9 rpg, 3.5 apg, 1.9 spg), & David Beatty (8.8 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 1.2 apg).
Defensively, Saint Joseph’s is allowing their opponents to average 73.6 ppg on 45.7% shooting from the field. The Hawks have a rebound margin of -2.8 and a turnover margin of -0.5.
The Hawks are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 Wednesday games and 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 neutral site games. The Explorers are 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS loss, however, are just 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
Saint Joseph’s might only have 4 wins on the season, however, I think the Hawks when fully healthy, represent more of the team we saw beat Richmond & Dayton than the one that opened the season with a 1-14 record. La Salle has had a few decent moments this season, however, this is a team that had lost 7 of their last 9 games and come into this game ranked just 256th in scoring offense & defense. Saint Joseph’s comes into this game with a bunch of momentum and as I think the duo of Ryan Daly & Taylor Funk will be able to score at will against the Explorers defense, I am taking Saint Joseph’s to cover this small spread. Good Luck!
