The Youngstown State Penguins their regular season with an overall record of 14-11 and earned the 6-seed in the Horizon League Championship after finishing conference play with a 9-11 record. Youngstown State was able to advance to the Quarterfinals after defeating the 11-seed UIC Flames by a 74-58 margin in the First Round of the conference championship this past Thursday. Youngstown State led by a 35-25 margin at halftime and pulled away later in the 2nd half after a 9-0 Penguins run gave Youngstown State a 66-51 lead with 2:21 left in regulation. Youngstown State shot 48.4% from the field and 34.8% from beyond the arc while UIC shot 45.3% from the field and 35.0% from beyond the arc. Youngstown State outrebounded UIC by a 31-30 margin and won the turnover battle by a 18-9 margin in the victory. Leading the way for the Penguins was Michael Akuchie who had a double-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds, & 1 steal.
On the season, Youngstown State is averaging 74.1 ppg on 42.6% shooting from the field. The Penguins are averaging 6.7 three-pointers per game on 30.2% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Youngstown State has been led by Naz Bohannon (16.6 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 2.8 apg), Darius Quisenberry (14.6 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 2.9 apg, 1.6 spg), Garrett Covington (11.8 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 1.4 apg, 1.4 spg), & Shemar Rathan-Mayes (10.4 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 3.6 apg, 1.3 spg).
Defensviely, Youngstown State is allowing their opponents to average 71.7 ppg on 45.7% shooting from the field. The Penguins have a rebound margin of 1.9 and a turnover margin of 3.2.
The Oakland Golden Grizzlies finished their regular season with an overall record of 10-17 and earned the 3-seed in the Horizon League Championship after finishing conference play with a 10-10 record. Oakland played a brutal non-conference schedule to start the season which was a big reason we saw Oakland being the year with a 0-9 record, however, there was some positives from their rough start, which included an 81-71 loss in OT against Michigan on the road. Oakland won 5 of 6 games at one point during the conference schedule which included an 81-71 win against Wright State, however, the Golden Grizzlies did struggle a bit down the stretch losing 4 of their last 6 games.
On the season, Oakland is averaging 74.6 ppg on 41.6% shooting from the field. The Golden Grizzlies are averaging 8.6 three-pointers per game on 33.1% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Oakland has been led by Jalen Moore (17.8 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 8.4 apg, 1.8 spg), Rashad Williams (13.1 ppg, 1.5 rpg, 1.0 apg), Daniel Oladapo (12.8 ppg, 8.8 rpg, 1.6 apg, 1.1 spg), & Micah Parrish (8.7 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 1.7 spg).
Defensively, Oakland is allowing their opponents to average 82.0 ppg on 47.8% shooting from the field. The Golden Grizzlies have a rebound margin of -3.7 and a turnover margin of 0.5.
The Penguins are 21-6 ATS in their last 27 road games following three or more consecutive home games and 11-5 ATS in their last 16 road games vs. a team with a losing home record. The Golden Grizzles are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games following a ATS loss, however, are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games following three or more consecutive road games.
Oakland was able to grab the 3-seed in the Horizon League Tournament, however, this is not a very strong 3-seed as despite having an offense that can put up points, the Golden Grizzlies have really struggled defensively as they rank just 334th in scoring defense & 326th in defensive FG%. Youngtown State has won 7 of their last 8 games and is starting live up to the potential many thought the Penguins had this season, especially since getting back Darius Quisenberry from an ankle injury. Oakland was able to defeat Youngstown State in both their games this season, however, between the fact that the Penguins did not have Darius Quisenberry for either of those games and that I think the Penguins offense, that ranks t-105th in scoring offense, will have plenty of success in this one, I think Youngstown State wins this one outright and I am taking them on the money line. Good Luck!
