The High Point Panthers will travel to Winthrop Coliseum to take on the Winthrop Eagles this Monday night in the Quarterfinals of the Big South Championship.
The High Point Panthers finished their regular season with an overall record of 8-14 and earned the 8th seed in the Big South Championship with a 6-11 conference record. High Point was able to advance past the 1st round of the Big South Championship after defeated the South Carolina Upstate Spartans, 65-60, this past Saturday. High Point allowed South Carolina Upstate to fight back from an early 18-5 deficit to take a 57-52 lead with just 5:17 left in regulation, however, the Panthers were solid defensively down the stretch and was able to pull out the victory after closing out the 2:37 left of regulation on a 7-0 run. High Point shot 37.9% from the field and 25.0% from beyond the arc while South Carolina Upstate shot 39.6% from the field and 31.8% from beyond the arc. Leading the way for the Panthers was John-Michael Wright who had a double-double with 24 points, 10 rebounds, & 2 assists.
On the season, High Point is averaging 67.2 ppg on 42.0% shooting from the field. The Panthers are averaging 5.0 three-pointers per game on 29.8% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, High Point has been led by John-Michael Wright (20.9 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 3.3 apg, 1.6 spg), Lydell Elmore (11.2 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 1.0 apg), Ahmil Flowers (8.4 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2.0 apg, 1.0 spg), & Bryant Randleman (4.2 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 2.3 apg, 1.3 spg).
Defensively, High Point is allowing their opponents to average 69.3 ppg on 44.5% shooting from the field. The Panthers have a rebound margin of 2.0 and a turnover margin of 0.9.
The Winthrop Eagles finished their regular season with an impressive 20-1 record and earned the top seed of the Big South Tournament after finishing conference play with a 17-1 record. Winthrop kicked off their season with a very impressive victory over UNC-Greensboro and continues to pile up wins which included an impressive 87-71 victory over the Furman Paladins. Winthrop’s only blemish this season came at home against UNC-Asheville in which the offense uncharacteristically struggled in a 57-55 loss, however, the Eagles were solid down the home stretch winning their final 4 games which included a 2-game road sweep of High Point in mid-February.
On the season, Winthrop is averaging 79.2 ppg on 45.6% shooting from the field. The Eagles are averaging 8.4 three-pointers per game on 35.3% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Winthrop has been led by Chandler Vaudrin (12.3 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 6.7 apg, 1.4 spg), Adonis Arms (10.7 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 1.9 apg, 1.0 spg), Charles Falden (9.9 ppg, 3.2 rpg), & D.J. Burns Jr. (9.6 ppg, 3.2 rpg).
Defensively, Winthrop is allowing their opponents to average 68.3 ppg on 45.6% shooting from the field. The Eagles have a rebound margin of 8.8 and a turnover margin of 2.2.
The Panthers are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 road games vs. a team with a winning home record, however, are just 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Eagles are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 Monday games, however, are just 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games.
High Point has one of the best players in the Big South in John-Michael Wright, however, Wright is really the only bright spot for the Panthers as High Point comes into this game ranked just 270th in scoring offense, 270th in FG%, & 223rd in defensive FG%. Winthrop was led by their offense which currently ranks 32nd in scoring offense & 72nd in three-pointers per game and between the fact that High Point was just 4-9 on the road this season and that I think Winthrop will keep the pedal on the gas in the 2nd half as this is the Big South Conference Tournament, I think the play here is to take the Eagles to cover this large spread. Good Luck!
