The Citadel Bulldogs snapped a 2-game losing streak and improved to 12-9 on the season after defeating the VMI Keydets, 75-74, this past Saturday. In a tight back-and-forth game throughout the 2nd half, The Citadel was able to pull out the victory after Hayden Brown made a game-winning lay-up with just 0.8 seconds left in regulation. The Citadel shot 41.7% from the field and 20.0% from beyond the arc while VMI shot 40.9% from the field and 23.3% from beyond the arc. The Citadel was outrebounded by VMI by a 44-42 margin, however, committed just 7 turnovers in the victory. Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Hayden Brown who had a double-double with 14 poitns, 14 rebounds, 3 assists, & 1 steal.
On the season, The Citadel is averaging 82.5 ppg on 45.8% shooting from the field. The Bulldogs are averaging 11.0 three-pointers per game on 37.1% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, The Citadel has been led by Hayden Brown (19.7 ppg, 11.0 rpg, 2.9 apg, 1.1 spg), Kaiden Rice (18.7 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 1.1 apg), Fletcher Abee (12.0 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 2.2 apg), Tyler Moffe (9.7 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 4.7 apg).
Defensively, The Citadel is allowing their opponents to average 77.8 ppg on 43.9% shooting from the field. The Bulldogs have a rebound margin of 1.3 and a turnover margin of -1.0.
The Mercer Bears dropped to 13-9 on the season after being defeated by the Furman Paladins, 70-60, this past Saturday. Mercer could get nothing going on the offensive end against Furman and could not fight back after the Paladins took a 62-51 lead with just 1:10 left in regulation. Mercer shot just 39.7% from the field and 25.0% from beyond the arc while Furman by 52.2% from the field and 27.8% from beyond the arc. Mercer was outrebounded by Furman by a 33-26 margin and committed 8 turnovers in the loss. Leading the way for the Bears was Neftali Alvarez who had 20 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 block, & 1 steal.
On the season, Mercer is averaging 77.8 ppg on 48.3% shooting from the field. The Bears are averaging 8.7 three-pointers per game on 37.5% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Mercer has been led by Ross Cummings (15.0 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 2.4 apg), Neftali Alvarez (13.8 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 4.6 apg, 1.4 spg), Leon Ayers III (12.6 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 2.0 apg, 1.2 spg), & Felipe Haase (12.0 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 3.0 apg, 1.0 spg).
Defensively, Mercer is allowing their opponents to average 73.6 ppg on 44.8% shooting from the field. The Bears have a rebound margin of 2.3 and a turnover margin of -0.6.
The Bulldogs are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall, however, are just 2-5 ATS in their last 7 road games. The Bears are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a double-digit loss at home, however, are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
Mercer is no doubt the better team in this one, however, the Bears have lost 5 of their last 8 games and can struggle defensively as they come into this matchup ranked just 253rd in scoring defense & 233rd in defensive FG%. The Citadel is not as bad as a team as we have seen in recent years and has solid wins against Wofford & ETSU this season and as I think their offense, which ranks 11th in scoring offense & 3rd in three-pointers made per game, can keep this one competitive, I am taking The Citadel to cover with the points in this one. Good Luck!
