Long Island University (LIU) faces Wagner on Thursday, January 14th at Spiro Sports Center for an NCAA basketball NEC matchup.
LIU is coming off a 71-58 win over Saint Francis (PA) in its last game on January 8th at home. LIU is off to a great start to the season in NEC play, winning three of its first four games of the season all in conference competition. The only loss LIU has this season was an 87-72 loss to Sacred Heart in game two of a back-to-back. LIU's leading scorer so far this season has been F Ty Flowers, who has scored 18.5 points per game for the Sharks. LIU as a team has scored 74.0 points per game and has shot the ball at a 40.5% clip from the field. LIU has also allowed 68.8 points per game to its opponents as well this season, as the defense has been a little below average thus far.
Wagner is coming off an 86-85 heartbreaking loss to Sacred Heart in its last game in double-overtime at home. Wagner was able to crush Sacred Heart in game one of the back-to-back at home on December 21st, but could not get the job done in the second game on the next day for the season series sweep. Wagner is now a measly 1-4 on the year and 1-3 in conference play this season, with the Sacred Heart win being the only victory for the Seahawks thus far. Wagner's leading scorer so far this season has been G Elijah Ford, who has scored 20.8 points per game for the Seahawks this season. Wagner as a team has scored 68.2 points per game and has shot the ball at a 40.4% clip from the field. Wagner has also allowed 73.0 points per game to its opponents this season.
Wagner opens as a 1-point favorite and the total is set at 138.5. I am going to take a shot with LIU here, as not only are the Sharks off to a better start this season, but Wagner has not played in over three weeks. We could see some rust on the side of Wagner, making me not want to lay even a single point with the home team.
