The Mercer Bears will travel to McKenzie Arena to take on the Chattanooga Mocs this Wednesday night in College Basketball action.
The Mercer Bears have had their last two games postponed due to Covid-19 protocols and come into this game with an overall record of 7-3 after dropping an 83-80 game to the Furman Paladins on January 2nd. Mercer struggled to slow down the Furman offense in this one and could not fight all the way back after falling behind by a 64-46 margin with 12:03 left in regulation. Mercer shot 55.6% from the field and 38.9% from beyond the arc while Furman shot 53.4% from the field and 41.7% from beyond the arc. Mercer outrebounded Furman by a 36-24 margin, however, lost the turnover battle by a 19-12 margin in the loss. Leading the way for the Bears was Ross Cummings who had 22 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 block, & 1 steal.
On the season, Mercer is averaging 81.6 ppg on 48.8% shooting from the field. The Bears are averaging 9.4 three-pointers per game on 38.2% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Mercer has been led by Ross Cummings (16.6 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2.1 apg), Neftali Alvarez (13.0 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 5.8 apg, 1.4 spg), Felipe Haase (12.5 ppg, 9.5 rpg, 3.9 apg, 1.0 spg), & Leon Ayers III (11.7 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 1.9 apg, 1.2 spg).
Defensively, Mercer is allowing their opponents to average 73.2 ppg on 43.8% shooting from the field. The Bears have a rebound margin of 6.7 and a turnover margin of -1.6.
The Chattanooga Mocs dropped to 10-3 on the season after being defeated by The Citadel Bulldogs, 92-87, this past Saturday. Chattanooga had no answers on the defensive end against The Citadel and could not fight back after a pair of FT’s by the Bulldogs Hayden Brown gave The Citadel an 86-85 lead with 2:39 left in regulation. Chattanooga shot 44.3% from the field and 36.4% from beyond the arc while The Citadel shot 50.0% from the field and 51.6% from beyond the arc. Chattanooga outrebounded The Citadel by a 38-31 margin and forced just 10 turnovers in the loss. Leading the way for the Mocs was Stefan Kenic who had 19 points, 5 rebounds, & 1 assist.
On the season, Chattanooga is averaging 76.5 ppg on 45.2% shooting from the field. The Mocs are averaging 8.8 three-pointers per game on 38.1% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Chattanooga has been led by David Jean-Baptiste (19.1 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 2.0 apg, 1.8 spg), Malachi Smith (16.6 ppg, 10.2 rpg, 3.8 apg, 1.4 spg), Stefan Kenic (13.2 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 2.0 apg), & A.J. Caldwell (7.5 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 3.2 apg, 1.3 spg).
Defensively, Chattanooga is allowing their opponents to average 69.7 ppg on 46.9% shooting from the field. The Mocs have a rebound margin of 1.2 and a turnover margin of 2.2.
The Bears are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 Wednesday games, however, just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Mocs are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 Wednesday games and 13-5-1 ATS in their last 19 games overall.
Mercer comes into this game losing 3 of their last 4 games and might have a bit of rust on them as this will be their first action in about 10 days. The Bears are a talented team, however, they can struggle defensively as they rank just 238th in scoring defense & 209th in defensive FG% which could lead to trouble as the Mocs come into this game with an offense that is ranked 98th in scoring offense & 38th in 3P-FG%. Chattanooga has been very solid at home this season and as I think their offense should have success in this one, I’m taking the Mocs to win this pick-em. Good Luck!
