The Elon Phoenix (12-20, CONF 8-11) and William & Mary Tribe (21-10, CONF 13-5) face off in the CAA tournament quarterfinal at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Washington D.C. William and Mary won both of the matchups this year against Elon, but the Phoenix were able to cover both of the spreads.
Elon hasn’t had the best season, but they have at least been competitive the last month. Over the last ten games the Phoenix has won six of the games and covered six of the spreads.
In the first game of the conference tournament, Elon was down by six points to James Madison at halftime. During the second half Elon’s defense locked down giving up only 27 points, which was enough to survive and advance. Elon doesn’t have a star, but Hunter Woods paced them against the Dukes putting up 15 points.
Overall this season Elon is averaging only 66 points per game, so if they want any chance, the defense is going to need to step up.
William & Mary seems to be hot at the right time winning five games in a row coming into this game. During that five-game stretch, William & Mary has also covered three of the spreads.
William & Mary had a first round bye during the tournament, so their last game came over a week ago against Elon. In that game, center Nathan Knight paced the team putting up 20 points. Willam & Mary finished that game 86 points which was enough for a seven point victory over Elon.
Center Nathan Knight is the star for William and Mary averaging 20.6 points and shooting over 52 percent from the field.
The over is 19-7 in Elon’s last 26 games overall. The under is 27-13 in Elon’s last 40 neutral site games. The under is 7-3 in William and Mary’s last ten games played on Sunday.
Elon covered each of the games this season against William & Mary but it won’t happen again in this game. The tired legs of Elon will catch up with them in the second half which will allow the Tribe to pull away and cover the spread.
