The VMI Keydets (8-23, CONF 3-15) and Samford Bulldogs (10-22, CONF 4-14) face off in the Southern Conference Tournament on Friday at Harrah's Cherokee Center, in Ashville North Carolina. VMI and Samford just faced off last Saturday and it was the Bulldogs coming out with an 84-78 victory.
It has been another down year for the Keydets and coming into this game they have lost eight of the last ten games. During the ten game stretch the only positive is they have covered six of the spreads.
The defense hasn’t been great all season for VMI and in their last game it was ugly giving up 84 points to Samford.
On offense, VMI is led by Travis Evee who is averaging 12.6 points while shooting 44.6 percent from the field. Evee has also shot 36 percent from the field. In the last two games Evee has only scored 17 points total, and the Keydets need more production out of him.
Samford has also had their fair share of struggles this season and coming into this game they have only won two of their last ten games.
Samford is the better offensive team, but their defense has also let them down giving up 84.3 points per game overall. Over the last five games Samford’s defense has been even worse giving up 87 points per game.
Samford is led by guard Josh Sharkey who is averaging 18 points per game while shooting 45.5 percent from the field. Over the last three games, Sharkey is averaging 25 points per game and they need him to be elite in this game.
The over is 24-10 in VMI’s last 34 games in conference play. Samford is 4-11-1 against the spread in their last 16 games in conference play. VMI is 0-8 against the spread in their last eight games against Samford.
VMI struggled in the last game against Samford and it’s going to happen again in this game. Look for Samford to run up the score and the Keydets won’t be able to keep up. Back the Keydets to win this game and cover the spread.
