The Stetson Hatters (16-16, 9-7 CONF) and the Liberty Flames (28-4, 13-3 CONF) will meet on Thursday, March 5th for the Semifinal game in the ASUN conference tournament. The game will be played at 7:00 PM eastern time.
Stetson took down North Alabama in the quarterfinal game of the conference tournament on Tuesday. Stetson scored 82 points in the 82-72 victory in front of their home crowd, the first home game in a conference tournament for Stetson in over 20 years. Liberty defeated NJIT at home 55-49, as defense reigned supreme in that game. Liberty is undefeated at home this season, and they will host this game as well.
Stetson scores 63.8 points per game on 44.4 percent field goal shooting this season. Stetson’s leading scorer is G Rob Perry, who scores 15.3 points per game. The leading rebounder for Stetson is C Mahamadou Diawara, who earns 6.6 rebounds per game. Stetson allows 65.7 points per game to the opposition, therefore they have a -1.9 scoring differential so far this season. Stetson also earns 33.9 rebounds, 9.8 assists, 2.4 blocks, and 6.5 steals per game as a team.
Liberty scores 68.2 points per game on 47.2 percent field goal shooting this season. Liberty’s leading scorer is G Caleb Homesley, who scores 14.9 points per game. The leading rebounder for Liberty is F Scottie James, who earns 7.5 rebounds per game. Liberty allows 53.0 points per game to the opposition, thus they have a +15.2 scoring differential so far this season. Liberty also earns 33.9 rebounds, 13.0 assists, 2.8 blocks, and 5.6 steals per game as a team.
Stetson is 18-12 against the spread this season and 5-5 against the spread. Stetson is also 8-7 against the spread on the road so far this season. Liberty is 15-14 against the spread this season and 4-5 against the spread in their last nine games. Liberty is also 4-9 against the spread at home so far this season.
There is no line out yet for this game, therefore I will just give my final score prediction and update this article tomorrow morning. I think this will be a close defensive battle for most of the game, but I think Liberty's experience and home-court advantage will prevail. Liberty wins 63-56 and advances to the Atlantic Sun championship game.
UPDATE: I understand that Liberty just beat Stetson at home by a good margin and that Liberty is untouchable at home this season. However, even NJIT made it a close game at Liberty in the quarterfinals. This is a Stetson team that has already beat Liberty once this season and has gotten a first-round win to motivate them in this conference tournament. What makes you think they will get routed in the most important game of their season? I will take Stetson and the 17 points.
