The St. John’s Red Storm (14-12, CONF 3-10) and Seton Hall Pirates (19-7, CONF 11-3) face off in a Big East showdown at the Prudential Center. The Pirates knocked off the Red Storm 82-79 in a game during the middle of January.
Most knew it would take a while for Mike Anderson to build something with St. John’s and this year has had a lot of growing pains. St. John’s has only three wins in their last ten games and during that stretch they have covered five spreads.
Anderson is known for teams who compete hard on defense, but on the road this season St. John’s defense has really struggled giving up 77.8 points and letting opponents shoot 42.3 percent from the field.
The offense for the Red Storm on the road also hasn’t been great with the team only 38 percent from the field, and 30.5 percent from the deep. Junior guard LJ Figueroa is averaging 14.6 points per game, but in the last game against Xavier he only scored eight points, and they need more production out of him if they want to win this game.
Seton Hall currently sits in first place in the Big East standings, but Villanova is right on their heels so this is a big game for them.
Coming into this game Seton Hall has lost two of the last three and they have failed to cover the spread in each of those games. At home Seton Hall has a 10-3 record and the defense has been strong giving up only 63.8 points and allowing opponents to shoot only 38.6 percent from the field.
Myles Powell is the star of Seton Hall, and he very well could be the player of the year in college basketball. Powell is averaging 21.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. In three of the last four games, Powell has failed to reach 20 points, and in this game, he needs to be better.
St. John’s are 3-8-1 against the spread in their last 12 road games. The home team is 21-8 against the spread in the last 29 meetings between St. John’s and Seton Hall.
The under is 7-3-1 in Seton Hall’s last 11 home games. The under is 7-2 in St. John’s last nine road games.
There is no doubt Seton Hall is the better team in this matchup, but they haven’t been as impressive in their last three games. The Pirates struggled to pull out the victory against the Red Storm earlier in the season and it’s going to happen again in this one. Seton Hall will find a way late to pull out a win, but St. John’s will cover the spread.
