The Quinnipiac Bobcats (12-13, CONF 7-8) and Monmouth Hawks (15-11, CONF 9-6) face off in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference showdown at The OceanFirst Bank Center. Quinnipiac knocked off Monmouth 84-70 in early January.
Quinnipiac played well to start conference play but coming into this game they are really struggling having lost five of the last six games. The one win for Quinnipiac during that stretch was in their last game against Canisius.
The Bobcats defense has struggled for most of the season, and on the road it’s even worse giving up 73.7 points per game, and allowing opponents to shoot 45.8 percent from the field. Quinnipiac uses a balanced attack on offense, and in the last victory they had three players score over 12 points. Quinnipiac’s leading scorer is guard Rich Kelly who is averaging 16.2 points while shooting 40.1 percent from the field. Kelly is also a key with closing out games as he shoots 88.3 percent from the charity strike.
The Hawks are hoping to get hot and make a run in the conference tournament, and coming into this game they have won two of the last three games. Monmouth is a team that likes to run at home, and so far this season they are averaging 77.7 points per game at The OceanFirst Bank Center.
Monmouth is led by guards Deion Hammond and Ray Salnave who are both averaging over 14 points per game. If both Hammond and Salnave have big games, Monmouth is going to be really hard to beat.
Monmouth doesn’t have the best defense and in the first meeting they gave up 84 points to Quinnipiac. Even if Monmouth needs to slow down the pace a bit, they need to do whatever they can to play better defense.
The over is 8-2 in Monmouth’s last 10 games as a favorite. The over is 9-4 in Monmouth’s last 13 games overall.
Monmouth would be smartest to slow down the pace, but it’s not going to happen. There is going to be plenty of scoring by both teams, and the over is going to cash with ease. It wouldn’t be shocking if both teams score 80 points.
