The Samford Bulldogs will travel to Hawkins Arena to take on the Mercer Bears this Wednesday night in College Basketball action.
The Samford Bulldogs snapped their 11-game losing streak and improved to 9-19 (3-11 Southern) on the season after defeating The Citadel Bulldogs, 74-62, this past Saturday. Samford was able to slow down The Citadel offense and pulled away later after an 18-2 Samford run gave them a 68-56 lead with just 3:02 left in regulation. Samford shot 43.1% from the field while holding The Citadel to just 33.8% shooting from the field and 28.6% shooting from beyond the arc. Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Josh Sharkey who had 18 points, 5 rebounds, 8 assists, and 3 steals.
On the season, Samford is averaging 73.9 ppg on 44.0% shooting from the field. The Bulldogs are averaging 6.5 three-pointers per game on 34.3% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Samford has been led by Josh Sharkey (17.4 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 7.2 apg, 2.8 spg), Brandon Austin (14.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 1.1 spg), and Robert Allen (13.6 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 1.1 apg, 1.0 spg, 1.2 bpg).
Defensively, Samford is allowing their opponents to average 80.1 ppg on 44.9% shooting from the field. The Bulldogs have a rebound margin of -1.8 and a turnover margin of -1.8.
The Mercer Bears dropped to 13-14 (7-7 Southern) on the season after being defeated by the UNC Greensboro Spartans, 67-55, this past Saturday. Mercer had no answers offensively for the UNC Greensboro defense and couldn’t make much of a run in the 2nd half after going into halftime trailing by a 29-22 margin. Mercer shot just 37.1% from the field & 23.3% from beyond the arc while also committing 21 turnovers in the loss. Leading the way for the Bears was Ethan Stair who had a double-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds, 1 assist, and 3 steals.
On the season, Mercer is averaging 70.9 ppg on 44.6% shooting from the field. The Bears are averaging 7.3 three-pointers per game on 35.0% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Mercer has been led by Djordje Dimitrijevic (17.2 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 3.4 apg, 1.6 spg), Ethan Stair (15.3 ppg, 8.9 rpg, 2.1 apg, 1.2 spg), and Jeffrey Stair (10.1 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 1.8 apg).
Defensively, Mercer is allowing their opponents to average 71.4 ppg on 43.8% shooting from the field. The Bears have a rebound margin of 3.9 and a turnover margin of -2.1.
The Bulldogs are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games and just 3-12 ATS on the road this season. The Bears are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games, however, are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games against Samford.
Samford comes into this game ranked 107th in scoring offense, however, the Bulldogs have really struggled defensively this season and currently rank just 339th in scoring defense and 278th in defensive FG%.
Mercer comes into this game T-188th in scoring offense, 127th in FG%, and 238th in scoring defense.
Samford was able pick up their first win since early January against The Citadel, however, this is a team that gives up just way too many points while not being anything more than average on the offensive end. Mercer can be a bit inconsistent, however, they showed their talent level with an impressive 16-point victory at ETSU and as they had no trouble putting up 90 points in their first match-up at Samford this season, I think Mercer doesn’t enough to cover this spread. Good Luck!
