The VCU Rams (17-8) will host the Dayton Flyers (23-2) on Tuesday, February 18th for a Atlantic-10 match up at the Stuart C Siegel Center in Richmond, VA. The game is scheduled for an 8:30pm eastern tip off.
VCU will come into this game desperate for a win after two straight losses. In their last game against Richmond the Rams dug themselves into a hole early as they trailed 24-42 at the half. They attempted to turn thing around in the second half but eventually fell 55-79. VCU was led by Marcus Santos-Silva who finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
On the season, VCU is averaging 72 points per game while shooting 43.2%. They are holding their opponents to 64.3 points per game for a differential of 7.7 points. They are doing a great job on the defensive end forcing almost 18 turnovers a game. The Rams are finding great production out of Marcus Santos-Silva, De’Riante Jenkins and Marcus Evans who are all averaging double figures on the year. VCU has played great at home this season going 13-1 however seem to struggle on the road going 4-4. They will need a big effort across the board if they stand a chance to beat the number 6 ranked Dayton Flyers.
The Dayton Flyers will come into this contest on an impressive 14 game win streak and are a conference leading 12-0 in Atlantic-10 play. In their most recent match up Dayton took a 71-63 victory over UMass with National Player of the Year Candidate Obi Toppin leading the way with 19 points and 7 rebounds. Junior guard Jalen Crutcher also chipped in 17 points on 5-11 from the field.
On the season, Dayton are averaging 81.2 points per game which is good for 5th nationally. They are shooting an impressive 52.3% from the field while holding their opponents to 65.6 points per game. The Flyers have a great balance of offensive production with 4 players averaging double digit scoring on the year with Obi Toppin leading the team at 19.7 points per game.
Dayton have really struggled covering the big number lately going 1-4 in their last 5 games ATS. VCU is not doing much better at 2-3 in their last 5 games. I expect VCU to get up for this big home game and try and force Dayton to turn the ball over and limit Obi Toppin’s possessions. It's tough to not to take a team that is 13-1 at home and getting points in this one but I think Dayton is just simply too good and should cover the small spread.
