The Penn State Nittany Lions (20-5) will host the Illinois Fighting Illini (16-9) on Tuesday, February 18th for a Big Ten match up at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, PA. The game is scheduled for a 6:30pm eastern tip off.
Penn State will come into this game extremely confident riding an 8-game win streak which has helped them to 2nd place in the conference standings behind Maryland. Penn State took care of business last game against Northwestern cruising to a comfortable 77-61 victory. Leading the Nittany Lions was Lamar Stevens with 23 points,7 rebounds and 2 assists. Myles Dread, Jamari Wheeler and Mike Watkins also all finished in double figures.
On the season, Penn State is averaging 77.5 points per game while shooting 44.7%. They are holding their opponents to 67.4 points per game for a differential of 10.1 points. The are really locking in on the defensive end recording 5.2 blocks per game while forcing opposing teams into almost 14 turnovers a game. What impresses me most about Penn State this season is their ability to protect home floor with an impressive 13-1 record at home.
The Fighting Illini will come into University Park really struggling as of late as they are currently on a 4-game losing streak. They dropped their last game to Rutgers 57-72 after being outscored 25-38 in the second half with Rutgers running away with the game. Illinois was led by Alan Griffin with 14 points and 6 rebounds and freshman center Kofi Cockburn providing a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
On the season, Illinois are averaging 73.0 points per game and are giving up 65.2. They are shooting 44.3% from the field while holding their opponents to 41.6%. Ayo Dosunmu is currently leading the team with 15.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. Kofi Cockburn and Andres Feliz are also averaging double figures on the season.
Penn State is 4-0-1 ATS in their last five games and are 5-0 straight up. Illinois are only 2-3 ATS in their last 5 games and a 1-4 straight up. I think this is a bad spot for Illinois here as Penn State are rolling and playing great at home. What makes things worse for Illinois also is leading scorer Ayo Dosunmu is questionable for the game after suffering an injury against Michigan State earlier in the week. I like Penn State to take care of business at home and cover this one.
