The Line: UAB Blazers -7.5 -- Over/Under: 139.5
The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders and the UAB Blazers meet in C-USA college basketball action from Bartow Arena on Wednesday night.
The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders will look to make strides out of the basement of C-USA, starting by rebounding from back-to-back losses after a 91-83 loss to Rice last time out. C.J. Jones led the way with 24 points including 6 threes while Antonio Green had 19 points and Javontae Millner added 13 points with 12 rebounds for the double-double. Donovan Sims added 7 points with a team-high 4 assists. Jones leads the Blue Raiders in scoring with 16.5 points per game while Green is Middle Tennessee’s only other double-digit scorer this year with 12.5 points per game. Sims leads the Blue Raiders in assists with 3.5 assists per game this season. As a team, Middle Tennessee is averaging 72.3 points on 42.2% shooting from the field, 33.9% from behind the 3-point line and 67.4% from the foul line while allowing opponents to average 76.7 points on 46.6% shooting from the field and 38.7% from behind the arc.
The UAB Blazers will look to pick up some steam down the stretch despite back-to-back losses after a 71-64 defeat at the hands of North Texas last time out. Tavin Lovan led the Blazers with 17 points on 6 of 9 shooting while Tarnell Pearson grabbed a team-high 6 rebounds and Jalen Benjamin had 14 points with 5 rebounds as 4 Blazers scored in double figures in the losing effort. Benjamin leads UAB with 12.6 points per game while Lovan is the only other double-digit scorer for UAB this season. Makhtar Gueye leads UAB in rebounding with 5.2 rebounds per game and Lovan and Tyreek Scott-Grayson are tied for the team lead with 1.8 assists per game this season. As a team, UAB is averaging 65.6 points per game on 44.9% shooting from the field, 31.9% from behind the arc and 69% from the foul line while allowing 64.3 points on 41.3% from the field and 33.2% from behind the 3-point line this season.
Middle Tennessee is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record while the under is 6-1 in their last 7 Wednesday games. UAB is 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games against a team with a losing record while the over is 6-2 in their last 8 games overall. The home team is 8-3 ATS in their last 11 meetings between these two teams.
I’ve ragged on Middle Tennessee all year, and UAB is the better team playing the better ball here. However, UAB hasn’t been blowing many teams out of the water, being outscored by 2.8 points per game and only putting up 65.1 points per game during conference play. Middle Tennessee hasn’t been winning the games, but the Blue Raiders have done a good job covering the number away from home so I’ll take my chances with Middle Tennessee and the points in this one.
