The UConn Huskies and the SMU Mustangs meet in AAC college basketball action from the Moody Coliseum on Wednesday night.
The UConn Huskies will look to make some moves in the AAC standings after back-to-back wins brought UConn to 4-6 in conference play after a 72-71 win over Cincinnati last time out. James Bouknight led the Huskies with 23 points while Christian Vital added 19 points with 4 threes and 4 assists and Josh Carlton had a team-high 10 rebounds. Vital leads the Huskies in scoring and rebounding with 14.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game while Bouknight is the only other double-digit scorer for UConn, averaging 11.6 points per game. Alterique Gilbert leads UConn in assists with 4.3 helpers per game this season. As a team, UConn is averaging 70.9 points per game on 41.3% shooting from the field, 32.9% from behind the arc and 72.1% from the foul line while allowing 65.2 points on 40.4% shooting from the field and 32.1% from behind the arc.
The SMU Mustangs will also look to climb some ranks in the AAC table after alternating wins and losses in each of their last four games following a 97-90 loss to Temple last time out. Kendric Davis led the Mustangs with 23 points with a team-high 10 assists for the double-double while Isiaha Mike had 13 points, a team-high 7 rebounds and 3 steals as 5 different Mustangs scored in double figures in the losing effort. Davis leads SMU in scoring and assists with 15.8 points and 7.3 assists per game while the aforementioned Mike, Tyson Jolly and Feron Hunt each have double-digit scoring averages with Hunt leading SMU in rebounding with 7 rebounds per game. As a team, SMU is averaging 75.9 points on 45.9% shooting from the field, 34.8% from behind the arc and 76.3% from the foul line while allowing opponents to average 68.5 points on 41.8% shooting from the field and 35% from behind the arc this season.
UConn is 5-2-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall and 2-7 ATS in their last 9 Wednesday games while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. SMU is 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 home games and 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 games following a loss while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. The home team is 9-2 ATS in the last 11 meetings between these two teams.
I’ve gone back and forth on this game as the points with UConn are tempting, mainly because I think the Huskies have a chance to win this one outright. However, the home team has owned this matchup in recent years, and a lot of UConn’s recent success has come at home while their play for the most part has unraveled on the road. SMU has been a bag of mixed results lately, but the Mustangs have won 6 straight at home so I’ll lay the points with SMU at home here.
