The Southern Miss Golden Eagles will travel to E. A. Diddle Arena to take on the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers this Saturday night in College Basketball action.
The Southern Miss Golden Eagles dropped to 7-17 (3-8 C-USA) on the season after being defeated by the Marshall Thundering Herd, 72-58, this past Thursday night. Southern Miss fought back from a 35-29 halftime deficit to take a lead midway through the 2nd half, however, the Golden Eagles offense disappeared late and allowed Marshall to easily pull away for victory after being held scoreless for the final of 6:13 of regulation. Southern Miss shot 42.1% from the field and lost the turnover battle by a 16-9 margin in the loss. Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was Leonard Harper-Baker who had a double-double with 18 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists, and a block.
On the season, Southern Miss is averaging 66.8 ppg on 44.4% shooting from the field. The Golden Eagles are averaging 5.0 three-pointers per game on 30.8% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Southern Miss has been led by Gabe Watson (13.2 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 3.0 apg, 1.0 spg), LaDavius Draine (11.9 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 1.7 apg, 1.2 spg), and Leonard Harper-Baker (8.7 ppg, 7.7 rpg, 2.9 apg, 1.5 spg, 1.0 bpg).
Defensively, Southern Miss is allowing their opponents to average 73.4 ppg on 43.8% shooting from the field. The Golden Eagles have a rebound margin of 0.5 and a turnover margin of -1.6.
The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers snapped their 2-game losing streak and improved to 15-8 (C-USA) on the season after defeating the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs, 65-54, this past Thursday night. Western Kentucky dominated Louisiana Tech on both ends of the court in the 1st half and led by the double-digits throughout the 2nd half after entering halftime with a 44-24 lead. Western Kentucky shot 44.4% from the field and 31.6% from beyond the arc in the victory. Leading the way for the Hilltoppers was Jordan Rawls who had 19 points, 1 rebounds, 2 assists.
On the season, Western Kentucky is averaging 76.1 ppg on 46.3% shooting from the field. The Hilltoppers are averaging 6.9 three-pointers per game on 33.9% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Western Kentucky has been led by Charles Bassey (15.3 ppg, 9.2 rpg, 1.3 apg, 1.6 bpg), Taveion Hollingsworth (15.1 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 2.8 rpg, 1.3 spg), and Carson Williams (13.2 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.0 spg).
Defensively, Western Kentucky is allowing their opponents to average 70.7 ppg on 43.8% shooting from the field. The Hilltoppers have a rebound margin of -1.7 and a turnover margin of 0.9.
The Golden Eagles are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record and just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a winning home record. The Hilltoppers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 Saturday games.
Southern Miss has lost 3 of their last 4 games and have really struggled on both ends of the court this season as the Golden Eagles rank just 287th in scoring offense and 277th in scoring defense.
Western Kentucky has won 6 of their last 8 games and have been led by their offense this season which ranks 61st in scoring offense & 50th in FG%.
Southern Miss is just 1-5 on the road in conference play this season with those losses coming at an average of 13.2 ppg. Western Kentucky is an impressive 10-1 at home this season and as their offense should have no problem putting up 80+ points against the Golden Eagles, I think that will be plenty to be able to cover this large spread. Good Luck!
