The Cincinnati Bearcats and the Wichita State Shockers meet in AAC conference college basketball action from the Charles Koch Arena on Thursday night.
The Cincinnati Bearcats will look to build on their current four-game winning streak after a 64-62 win over Houston last time out. Jarron Cumberland led the Bearcats with 17 points on 5 of 12 shooting with a team-high 7 assists and a pair of blocks while Tre Scott came right behind with 16 points and a team-high 11 rebounds along with 4 assists and a pair of blocks. Keith Williams added 12 points and Chris Vogt added 10 points with 5 blocks to round out the group of double-digit scorers for Cincinnati in the winning effort. Cumberland leads Cincinnati in scoring and assists with an average of 15 points and 4.3 assists per game while Scott leads the Bearcats in rebounding with 9.3 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Cincinnati is averaging 72.2 points per game on 44.9% shooting from the field, 31.8% from behind the arc and 68% from the foul line this season.
The Wichita State Shockers will look to rebound from a 54-51 loss to Tulsa last time out. Kaime Echenique led the Shockers with 15 points on 7 of 12 shooting with 10 rebounds and 3 blocks for the double-double as the lone double-digit scorer for Wichita State in the losing effort. Erik Stevenson had 6 points but still leads Wichita State in scoring with an average of 12.1 points per game while Trey Wade leads the Shockers in rebounding with 6.1 rebounds per game and Jamarius Burton leads Wichita State in assists with 3.4 assists per game this season. As a team, Wichita State is averaging 73.4 points per game on 40.4% shooting from the field, 32.5% from behind the arc and 69.2% from the foul line this season.
Cincinnati is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall and 3-10 ATS in their last 13 road games while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games following a win. Wichita State is 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall and 0-4-1 ATS in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 7-2 in their last 9 home games. The road team is 5-0 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams and the underdog is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings as well.
I get Wichita State being favored at home here, but the problem I have is that the Shockers haven’t been overly impressive on offense lately, and the lower scoring game tends to lend itself to Cincinnati’s style of play, which is a more physical, defensive style. Add in how well the Bearcats have been playing over the last couple of weeks, and I think the Bearcats have a good shot with the points here. I’ll take a chance with Cincinnati and the points in this one.
