The UT-Arlington Mavericks and the Appalachian State Mountaineers meet in Sun Belt conference college basketball action from the Holmes Convocation Center on Thursday night.
The UT-Arlington Mavericks will look to build on a 68-54 win over Louisiana-Monroe in their last outing. Sam Griffin led the Mavericks with 17 points on 6 of 9 shooting with 4 threes while Radshad Davis added 15 points with 4 threes of his own. Jabari Narcis added 13 points with 3 threes and a team-high 10 rebounds for the double-double to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for UT-Arlington in the win. David Azore added a team-high 8 assists while Brian Warren added 7 points with a team-high 6 assists. Azore leads UT-Arlington in scoring with an average of 15.2 points per game while Narcis leads the Mavericks in rebounding with 6.8 rebounds per game and Warren leads UT-Arlington in assists with 3.9 assists per game this season. As a team, UT-Arlington is averaging 70.7 points per game on 41.8% shooting from the field, 31.7% shooting from 3-point range and 76.9% from the foul line this season.
The Appalachian State Mountaineers will look to rebound after a 93-86 loss to Little Rock last time out. Justin Forrest led App State with 23 points on 8 of 11 shooting with 5 threes while Oshowen Williams added 18 points on a perfect 7 of 7 from the floor with 3 threes and Isaac Johnson added 17 points on 7 of 8 shooting with a pair of threes and team-highs of 9 assists and 4 steals. Kendall Lewis added 11 points with 4 rebounds to round out the group of double-digit scorers for App State in the losing effort. Forrest leads the Mountaineers in scoring and assists with an average of 19.1 points and 2.6 assists per game while Johnson leads Appalachian State in rebounding with 7.2 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Appalachian State is averaging 69.5 points per game on 43.8% shooting from the field, 32.2% from behind the arc and 66.1% from the foul line this season.
UT-Arlington is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 road games while the under is 9-3 in their last 12 Thursday games. Appalachian State is 2-7-1 ATS in their last 10 games overall and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 home games while the under is 10-3 in their last 13 home games. The home team is 5-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.
App State at home in a pick ‘em is tempting, but the issue I have is that the Mountaineers haven’t been great offensively and the Mountaineers have had serious issues covering the number at home this season. UT-Arlington isn’t a world-beater by any means, but the Mavericks have played really well on the road this season, covering half of their 12 road games while also picking up 5 outright wins on the road this season. I’ll side with UT-Arlington in this pick ‘em.
