The Pittsburgh Panthers (14-8, 5-6 CONF) and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (13-8, 4-6 CONF) will meet on Wednesday, February 5th for an ACC conference matchup at the Purcell Pavillion in South Bend, IN. The game will be played at 6:30 PM eastern time.
Pittsburgh is coming off a much-needed ACC win over rival Miami by the score of 62-57 at home. Prior to that game, Pittsburgh dropped back-to-back ACC games to Syracuse and Duke. Pittsburgh is over .500 on the year, so they still have a shot at some postseason tournament, but the NCAA Tournament is very unlikely. Notre Dame is coming off of two home wins against easier opponents in the ACC this season, Wake Forest and Georgia Tech. Notre Dame is in a similar position as Pittsburgh, as although they are over .500, a below .500 conference record this late in the season makes it very unlikely for an NCAA Tournament berth.
Pittsburgh is certainly more of a defensive-minded team that some of the other high-flying, high-scoring offenses in the ACC. Pitt scores about 66.2 points per game, and only allows 62.6 points per game as well. Pittsburgh also earns 35.2 rebounds, 12.5 assists, 3.5 blocks, and 7.5 steals per game.
Notre Dame is more of an offense-first type team, that scores 76.8 points per game on only 42.9% FG shooting. If Notre Dame’s FG % rose to around 44%, which is about the country’s average, they may be able to score upwards of 80 points per game. Notre Dame allows 68.8 points per game, so they benefit from an eight-point positive scoring differential. Notre Dame also earns 38.5 rebounds, 17.3 assists, 4.0 blocks, and 5.9 steals per game.
Pittsburgh is 11-11 ATS this season and 4-6 ATS in their last ten games. Pittsburgh is also 3-3 ATS on the road so far this season. Notre Dame is 12-9 ATS this season and 7-3 ATS in their last ten games. Notre Dame is also 8-6 ATS at home so far this season.
I think this is a modest line for Notre Dame, a team that can score the ball very efficiently. I think playing at home vs a team like Pittsburgh is a good match for Notre Dame, and I see them taking advantage of the Panthers struggling offense. I will take Notre Dame and lay the 5.5 points.
