The Charleston Cougars improved to 13-9 (7-9 CAA) on the season after defeating the James Madison Dukes, 87-68, this past Thursday. Charleston led by just a 40-37 margin at halftime, however, had no trouble generating offense in the 2nd half against the Dukes and pulled away after a 9-0 run gave Charleston a 68-54 lead with 6:39 left in regulation. Charleston shot an impressive 50.8% from the field and 54.2% from beyond the arc in the victory. Leading the way for the Cougars was Grant Riller who had 36 points, 7 rebounds, a 2 assists.
On the season, Charleston is averaging 71.5 ppg on 44.0% shooting from the field. The Cougars are averaging 7.5 three-pointers per game on 34.1% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Charleston has been led by Grant Riller (22.0 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 4.1 apg, 1.5 spg), Brevin Galloway (11.2 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 1.7 apg, 2.0 spg), and Sam Miller (8.5 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 1.0 apg, 1.0 bpg).
Defensively, Charleston is allowing their opponents to average 67.8 ppg on 41.9% shooting from the field. The Cougars have a rebound margin of -1.4 and a turnover margin of 1.0.
The Towson Tigers won their 7th consecutive game and improved to 13-9 (7-3 CAA) on the season after defeating the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks, 77-66, this past Thursday. Towson had no trouble shutting down the UNC-Wilmington offense and lead throughout the 2nd half after going into halftime with a 40-30 lead. Towson held UNC-Wilmington to just 37.5% shooting from the field & 29.2% from beyond the arc while also outrebounding the Seahawks by a 42-29 margin in the victory. Leading the way for the Tigers was Nakye Sanders who had a double-double with 13 points, 11 rebounds, 1 block, and a steal.
On the season, Towson is averaging 70.5 ppg on 43.2% shooting from the field. The Tigers are averaging 6.5 three-pointers per game on 33.3% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, Towson has been led by Brian Fobbs (16.1 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 2.0 apg), Allen Betrand (13.6 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 1.2 apg), and Nakye Sanders (9.2 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 1.7 apg).
Defensively, Towson is holding their opponents to an average of 65.9 ppg on 40.0% shooting from the field. The Tigers have a rebound margin of 4.3 and a turnover margin of -0.7.
The Cougars are 7-3-1 ATS in their last 11 road games, however, are just 28-61-4 ATS in their last 93 games following an ATS win. The Tigers are 7-0 ATS in their last 7 games overall and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games.
Charleston has been steady on both ends of the court this season as the Cougars come into this game ranked 171st in scoring offense, T-143rd in scoring defense, and 150th in defensive FG%.
Towson is once again led by their defense which comes into this game ranked 94th in scoring offense, 55th in defensive FG%, and 72nd in rebound margin.
Charleston has been one of the best CAA teams over the last few years and still have arguably the CAA’s best player in Grant Riller, however, this year’s version of the Cougars isn’t as strong as we’ve seen recently. Towson has been lights out recently which included an impressive 70-58 victory on the road agianst William & Mary and although Charleston was able to secure a 81-69 victory at home this season, I think the Tigers defense give the Cougars some trouble in this one and that Brian Fobbs and the offense does enough to cover this small home spread. Good Luck!
