The Belmont Bruins (15-7, 6-3 CONF) and the Jacksonville State Gamecocks (9-13, 4-5 CONF) will meet on Saturday, February 1st for an Ohio Valley Conference matchup at Pete Mathews Coliseum. The game will be played at 5:00 PM eastern time.
Belmont is coming off a 92-84 win over TNTC, and that victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Bruins. Belmont was the preseason favorite to win the conference after being runner-ups last year and giving Maryland a good run in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Jacksonville State has played decent basketball in conference play, after having a not-so-stellar non-conference start. Jacksonville State is coming off a loss to TNST, 72-62 at home.
Belmont is definitely an offense-first team, as the Bruins score 81.6 points per game off 47.5% FG shooting. Belmont’s defense has also faired well, as the Bruins give up only 69.4 points per game, which is not fantastic nor poor by any means. Belmont also earns 39.6 rebounds, 19.0 assists, 3.4 blocks, and 6.5 steals per game as well.
Jacksonville State scores 72.6 points per game this season on 44.7% FG shooting. Their offense has struggled a bit lately, and they will look to break through against Belmont. The Gamecocks defense has played well, giving up 68.5 points per game. Jacksonville State also earns 36.8 rebounds, 14.0 assists, 2.7 blocks, and 6.6 steals per game.
Belmont is 10-11 ATS this season and 5-5 ATS in their last ten games. Belmont is also 4-8 ATS on the road so far this season. Jacksonville State is 9-10-1 ATS this season and 6-3 ATS in their last ten games. Jacksonville State is also 3-5 ATS at home so far this season.
Although Belmont has not gotten the best results in conference play for their standards, I still think this is the team to beat in the OVC. Jacksonville State has played competitively up until this point, but I feel that this will be a game where Belmont flexes its muscles and takes care of business. I will take Belmont -7.5
