The Southern Illinois Salukis and the Drake Bulldogs meet in MVC college basketball action from the Knapp Center on Saturday evening.
The Southern Illinois Salukis will look to add to their current four-game winning streak after a 68-63 win over Loyola-Chicago in their last outing. Eric McGill led the Salukis with 27 points on 9 of 11 shooting with a pair of threes and 6 rebounds while Barret Benson added 13 points with a team-high 9 rebounds and Ronnie Suggs added 10 points to round out the trio of double-digit scorers for Southern Illinois in the winning effort. Marcus Domask added 6 points with 5 rebounds and a team-high 5 assists as well in the victory. Aaron Cook continues to miss time due to injury but still leads Southern Illinois in scoring and assists with an average of 15 points and 3.3 assists per game while Benson leads the Salukis in rebounding with 5.6 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Southern Illinois is averaging 62.6 points per game on 43.2% shooting from the field, 33.3% from behind the arc and 72.3% from the foul line this season.
The Drake Bulldogs will look to rebound after a 58-56 loss to Indiana State in their last outing. Liam Robbins and Jonah Jackson each had 12 points with Robbins adding 11 rebounds for the double-double while Jackson hit 4 threes as the lone pair of double-digit scorers for Drake in the losing effort. Garrett Sturtz added 8 points to match his 8 rebounds while Roman Penn, D.J. Wilkins and Anthony Murphy each had a team-high 4 assists in the loss. Robbins leads Drake in scoring and rebounding with an average of 13.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game while Penn leads the Bulldogs in assists with 6.1 assists per game this season. As a team, Drake is averaging 70.1 points per game on 46.1% shooting from the field, 34.6% from behind the arc and 70.2% from the foul line this season.
Southern Illinois is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a win while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 Saturday games. Drake is 36-13-2 ATS in their last 51 home games and 34-15-2 ATS in their last 51 games overall while the over is 40-19-1 in their last 60 games following a loss. The underdog is 6-0 ATS in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.
The points with the Salukis are definitely worth a look as they’ve come into this one winners of four straight and that includes a 17-point win over these same Drake Bulldogs to start that run. However, a lot of that success came at home, and the lone road win came against an Illinois State team that’s near the bottom of the conference standings. Drake hasn’t forgotten that game just a couple of weeks ago, and the Bulldogs are a different animal at home, going 11-0 SU and outscoring teams by 14.1 points per game. I just think the Salukis run ends here, so I’ll lay the points with Drake in this revenge spot.
