The Arkansas Pine-Bluff Golden Lions and the Texas Southern Tigers meet in SWAC college basketball action from H&PE Arena on Monday night.
The Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions will be out to snap a three-game losing streak after a 67-54 loss to Prairie View A&M last time out. Marquell Carter led the Lions with 12 points along with a team-high 8 rebounds as the lone APB player to score in double figures in the losing effort. Markedric Bell added 7 points in just 14 minutes but still leads the Golden Lions in scoring with 10.2 points per game while Carter leads the Golden Lions in rebounding with 6 rebounds per game and Jordan McNair leads Arkansas-Pine Bluff in assists with 2 helpers per game this season. As a team, Arkansas-Pine Bluff is averaging 53 points per game on 40% shooting from the field, 28.1% from behind the arc and 61.3% from the foul line this season.
The Texas Southern Tigers will look to build on an 80-67 win over Mississippi Valley State in their last outing for their 4th straight win. Justin Hopkins led the Tigers with 18 points with a team-high 17 rebounds along with 4 assists and 3 steals for the double-double while Eden Ewing added 17 points with 16 rebounds and 3 assists for his own double-double as the only other double-digit scorer for Texas Southern in the win. John Jones also added 9 points with 6 rebounds and 4 assists while Bryson Etienne added 8 points with 7 boards and Tyrik Armstrong added 9 points and 4 assists of his own. Armstrong leads Texas Southern in scoring and assists with an average of 14.3 points and 4.5 assists per game while Yahuza Rasas leads Texas Southern in rebounding with 7.7 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Texas Southern is averaging 70.9 points per game on 39.7% shooting from the field, 28.2% from behind the arc and 71.4% from the foul line this season.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a loss while the under is 11-4 in their last 15 games overall. Texas Southern is 6-2-1 ATS in their last 9 games overall and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games following a win while the over is 9-4 in their last 13 home games.
This is a ton of points to be giving up with Texas Southern as the Tigers aren’t a team I associate double-digit favorite lines with. However, it’s not easy taking even this many points when you have an Arkansas-Pine Bluff team that doesn’t know how to score and are one of the worst offensive teams in the country. Granted a lot of that came from a hard non-conference schedule, but even in conference play the Golden Lions are scoring just 59 points per game and being outscored by 10.2 points per game. I just don’t see Arkansas-Pine Bluff keeping pace here, so I’ll lay the points with Texas Southern in this one.
