The Akron Zips and the Ohio Bobcats meet in college basketball MAC-tion from the Ohio Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Akron Zips will look to keep the ball rolling with wins in 6 of their last 7 games following an 81-60 win over Miami-Ohio last time out. Loren Cristian Jackson led the Zips with 20 points on 8 of 13 shooting with 4 threes while Xeyrius Williams came right behind with 19 points including 5 threes and a team-high 7 rebounds and Tyler Cheese added 18 points with a team-high 5 assists. Channel Banks added 12 points coming on a perfect 4 of 4 mark from behind the arc to cap off the scoring in double figures for Akron in the win. Jackson leads the Zips in scoring and assists with an average of 17.6 points and 5.1 assists per game while Williams leads the Zips in rebounding with 9.7 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Akron is averaging 76.9 points per game on 44.9% shooting from the field, 39.3% from behind the arc and 76% from the foul line this season.
The Ohio Bobcats will look to bounce back after losing 5 of their last 7 games with an 83-74 loss to Toledo last time out. Jason Preston led the Bobcats with 27 points on 11 of 21 shooting with 7 rebounds and a team-high 8 assists while Ben Roderick added 11 points with 3 threes as the only other Ohio player to score in double figures in the losing effort. Sylvester Ogbonda added a team-high 11 rebounds as well in the loss for the Bobcats. Preston leads Ohio in scoring and assists with an average of 16.5 points and 7.5 assists per game while Ben Vander Plas leads Ohio in rebounding with 7.1 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Ohio is averaging 71.2 points per game on 44.7% shooting from the field, 34.8% from behind the 3-point line and 66.9% from the foul line this season.
Akron is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 road games while the under is 4-0 in their last 4 games as a road favorite. Ohio is 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games against a team with a winning record while the over is 5-1 in their last 6 games as a home underdog. The home team is 8-3 ATS in the last 11 meetings between these two teams.
I get that this is an in-state rivalry so a lot of times you throw trends and stuff like that out the window, but the problem is that it’s hard to ignore that these two teams are just headed in opposite directions right now, and Akron is playing some of the best ball in the MAC right now, outscoring conference foes by 14.7 points per game while also boasting a 6-0 ATS record on the road and outscoring teams by 6.5 points per game as well. Ohio’s numbers are on par at home, but I just think the recent form gives Akron the edge here.
