The Western Michigan Broncos and the Northern Illinois Huskies meet in college basketball MAC-tion from the NIU Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Western Michigan Broncos could use a win after losing 4 of their last 5 games following a 90-79 loss to Buffalo last time out. Brandon Johnson and Titus Wright each had a team-high 18 points with 6 rebounds, with Johnson shooting 6 of 9 with a pair of threes while Wright shot 6 of 7 from the floor. Michael Flowers added 12 points with a team-high 5 assists and B. Artis White chipped in 10 points with 3 threes to finish off the scoring in double figures for Western Michigan in the loss. Flowers leads Western Michigan in scoring and assists with 17.8 points and 3.5 assists per game while Johnson leads the Broncos in rebounding with 8.2 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Western Michigan is averaging 72.4 points per game on 42.6% shooting from the field, 31.8% from behind the 3-point line and 72.4% from the foul line this season.
The Northern Illinois Huskies will look to build on a 76-69 win over Kent State in their last outing. Eugene German led the Huskies with 18 points along with a team-high 8 rebounds while Lacey James added 16 points on 6 of 11 shooting with a pair of steals and Darius Beane added 14 points to finish off the trio of double-digit scorers for NIU in the winning effort. German leads Northern Illinois in scoring and assists with an average of 20 points and 2.7 assists per game while James leads the Huskies in rebounding with 7.5 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Northern Illinois is averaging 67.9 points per game on 40.9% shooting from the field, 34% from behind the arc and 68.4% from the foul line this season.
Western Michigan is 8-0-1 ATS in their last 9 Saturday games and 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a loss while the over is 5-2 in their last 7 games overall. Northern Illinois is 3-10 ATS in their last 13 home games and 1-10 ATS in their last 11 games against a team with a losing record while the under is 4-1 in their last 5 games following a win. The underdog is 5-0 ATS in the last 5 meetings between these two teams.
I’ve gone back and forth on this game, especially as I’m not really sold on either team right now. However, Northern Illinois just has had a knack for covering against Western Michigan, covering in each of the last 4 head-to-head and it doesn’t hurt that the Huskies are outscoring teams by 8.8 points per game at home while allowing just 63 points per game. On the other side, Western Michigan is giving up a ridiculous 79.8 points per game on the road and the Broncos are just struggling right now. I’ll side with Northern Illinois for another cover in this one.
