The Appalachian State Mountaineers and the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers meet in Sun Belt conference college basketball action from the HTC Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Appalachian State Mountaineers could use a win after losing 4 of their last 5 games following a 73-67 loss to Little Rock in their last outing. Justin Forrest led the Mountaineers with 20 points on 7 of 14 shooting with 3 triples and a whopping 8 steals while O’Showen Williams added 11 points with a team-high 6 rebounds as the only other App State player to score in double figures in the losing effort. Forrest leads App State in scoring and assists with an average of 18.6 points and 2.7 assists per game while Isaac Johnson leads Mountaineers in rebounding with 7.6 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Appalachian State is averaging 68.2 points per game on 42.4% shooting from the field, 29.9% from behind the 3-point line and 65.5% from the foul line this season.
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers will look to rebound from back-to-back losses after an 80-75 loss to Arkansas State last time out. Keishawn Brewton led the Chanticleers with 32 points on 10 of 19 shooting with 8 threes while Tommy Burton added 16 points with 13 rebounds and 4 steals for the double-double as the only other Coastal Carolina player to score in double digits in the loss. DeVante Jones added 8 points with 7 rebounds and a team-high 5 assists as well in the defeat. Brewton leads Coastal Carolina in scoring with an average of 15.3 points per game while Burton leads the Chanticleers in rebounding with 7.2 rebounds per game and Jones leads Coastal Carolina in assists with 5.8 assists per game this season. As a team, Coastal Carolina is averaging 78.9 points per game on 45% shooting from the field, 36.2% from behind the arc and 69.3% from the foul line this season.
Appalachian State is 0-7 ATS in their last 7 games overall and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 games against a team with a winning record while the under is 6-2 in their last 8 Saturday games. Coastal Carolina is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 Saturday games while the over is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall. The home team is 5-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings between these two teams.
I get that Coastal Carolina’s been a mixed bag lately with their results, but the Chanticleers have at least been a bit more consistent lately with the wins while App State has had a couple of Ws as well but the Mountaineers can’t cover a game to save their proverbial lives right now, failing to cover in seven straight games. The Mountaineers are also being held to just 65.1 points per game on the road while Coastal is averaging 79 points per game at home this season. I wouldn’t go crazy on this one, but Coastal Carolina at home seems like the play with App State’s inability to cover the number.
